Today we’d like to introduce you to Bonita Green.

Hi Bonita, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is fueled by a genuine passion for uplifting others and an unwavering drive to grow, both personally and professionally. I first dipped my toes into the world of customer service, working in consumer goods retail—where every day brought new people, challenges, and opportunities to make someone’s day a little brighter. Eventually, I found myself drawn to our local nonprofit, where we work hand-in-hand with community partners to champion underserved populations. Those experiences opened my eyes to the true power of empathy, resilience, and the importance of forging strong, authentic connections.

As time went on, I eagerly embraced chances to learn new skills and step into roles with greater impact. This journey took me into nonprofit leadership and advocacy, where I discovered just how transformative collective action can be. Each chapter has deepened my belief in the magic of collaboration and the ripple effect of positive change. Today, I’m proud and grateful for every experience that’s shaped my path, and I remain wholeheartedly dedicated to creating meaningful change in the community I call home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path hasn’t always been a walk in the park. In the beginning, adapting to unfamiliar situations and learning the ropes of nonprofit work was a real challenge. Sometimes, it felt like I was up against resource shortages and discouraging setbacks—but looking back, those tough moments gave me a chance to build resilience and sharpen my problem-solving skills.
Advocacy brought its own unique obstacles. Pushing for change often means working with government agencies and maneuvering through endless red tape, which can try anyone’s patience and slow things down. Then there’s fundraising—it’s a constant hustle to find the resources our mission needs, and success demands plenty of creativity and persistence.
Getting the community involved is both a highlight and a hefty responsibility. Inspiring folks to join in—especially when life is busy for everyone—means showing up authentically and steadily building trust. Juggling what the community needs with what our organization can realistically provide has taught me so much about patience, innovative thinking, and the incredible results that come from working together. Every bump in the road has shaped how I see things and made my dedication to lasting change that much stronger.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As Executive Director of the Merrick-Moore Community Development Corporation, my work centers on empowering the community through a wide range of innovative programs and initiatives. I specialize in designing and leading projects that foster sustainable growth, such as affordable housing development, youth engagement programs, food sovereignty initiatives, home repairs, technology training, air quality improvements, and educational opportunities. My experience spans over forty years in consumer goods, beauty, and retail, as well as more than two decades running a small business—giving me a unique ability to bridge the gap between entrepreneurial insight and strategic leadership.
I’m known for being a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion, with a knack for bringing together diverse groups—government officials, local businesses, and community organizations—to tackle challenges collaboratively. What truly sets me apart is my commitment to building meaningful relationships and making sure that the voices of underserved communities are heard and uplifted. I strive to create spaces where everyone feels welcome and empowered to participate in shaping the future of Merrick-Moore and Durham.
What I’m most proud of is the tangible impact these efforts have had on people’s lives. Whether it’s helping families access safe, affordable housing, providing young people with opportunities to learn and grow, or supporting local entrepreneurs, every project is rooted in the belief that lasting change comes from working together. The joy of seeing community members thrive and knowing that our work has opened doors for others motivates me every day to keep pushing for progress and positive transformation.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people don’t realize about me is that I absolutely love to laugh and don’t take myself too seriously. Even though my work is all about driving change and supporting the community, I can be super silly at times—I believe a good sense of humor goes a long way in building connection and keeping things light when the going gets tough.
