Conversations with Cassie Diaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Diaz.

Hi Cassie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I am originally from Hollywood, Florida (born & raised). After high school, I was working in restaurants serving and tried community college and I realized I didn’t know what I truly wanted to do with my life so I left school and just worked in restaurants throughout the years.

I was working at Outback Steakhouse when I met first Jorge, my husband, we fell in love fast and hard. Soon after that, I realized I would really be interested in going to cosmetology school so I went while I was still living in Florida. A few months into school we found out I was pregnant with our daughter, Violet.

So I was still in school after we found out, but we didn’t love the idea of raising our kids in Florida, and my parents were living in Durham, NC at the time, we had visited before and we loved it. We decided we wanted to move to NC and I left school and we moved here in April 2016. I put cosmetology school aside for a little bit and was a stay-at-home mom with my daughter.

In 2017, right after Violet’s first birthday, we found out I was pregnant with our son, Vincenzo (Vinny). He was born in March 2018, I was still a stay-at-home mom at this time. I started working in the summer of 2018 as a bartender, then I went back to school in October 2019, I was working, going to school, and being a mom all at once.

I was in school right as the pandemic started so that definitely did not go as planned but I stuck through all the zoom classes, mannequin work, and staring at a screen all day (lol), we were able to be back in person mid-way through the pandemic. I graduated in December 2020.

I started looking for salons and was referred to Maggie Leonhardt, I sent my resume over to her, talked and met in person, and soon after, I started assisting Maggie. I got the opportunity to help her open up The High Tide Salon, my salon home!

It’s been a year since I’ve been working side by side with her and my apprenticeship is coming to an end I’ve learned so much throughout this past year working with her. I feel very lucky to find Maggie and her salon. Everyone at the salon has been a huge support for me and helped to get my name out for new clients.

I have recently opened my schedule to take more clients so I’m excited for what’s to come!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It wasn’t a smooth road but it also wasn’t the worst!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist. I currently don’t have a specialty but I would love to do a little bit of everything honestly, I never want to get stuck on one thing.

I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown as a stylist in the last year.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m not sure! I’m an open book with my co-workers, we talk about it all.
