Conversations with Christin King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christin King.

Hi Christin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started CKCreations at the end of 2016/ early 2017 after leaving NC State, applying for jobs in design, and getting lots of closed doors. CK was always a dream of mine from the as early back as high school, making and designing custom sharpie shoes for my classmates and enjoying the process of taking their ideas and turning it into art. I truly decided to just go for it. Almost 5 years ago, pop-ups were just starting and small business without a storefront (or working capital) was hard to navigate! But I knew I had the skills to brand and market myself and I knew I could network through social media. My main focus was to show up like me! Someone authentic that people wanted to support and help a local artist which turned into a full-fledged one-stop design shop! I’m now designing for major local brands, have a locally-inspired art-based merch collection of my own, and get to do what I love every day!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I love to tell people that I started with $800 in my bank account because it truly gives the reality of the situation. I really just went for it! Started taking on wedding and branding clients and really just doing any art people wanted or needed. Yes, there were times when the budget was tight, but I love being able to look back and see how I navigated through that season and it makes me show up as a better entrepreneur now. I love being able to stand in the fact that I’m a self-funded woman.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in full-service branding, custom wedding design + calligraphy, and locally-inspired art-based products. I also work with brands to create their own collections of merchandise using custom branded illustrations as well as paint murals, provide creative direction and mentor other small businesses and artists who are just getting their feet off the ground. I’d say what sets me apart is I’m able to take the illustrative and handmade style of art and match it with the ideas of others. I bring art into the digital design world and find a way to make art attainable to all. I’m most proud of showing up authentically in my artistic style and on social media. I’m also proud of the way I’ve learned to truly listen to my client’s needs in the collaborative process and I love the feeling of succeeding or over-exceeding their expectations.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
The first thing that comes to mind is the stump in the front yard of my childhood home. I called it my stage. I loved playing make-believe and I felt like I could truly be anything I wanted to be on that stage. It’s humbling to see how much gumption and charisma that little girl had and I do my best to honor her spirit.
