Conversations with Deatrice Snuggs-McCloud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deatrice Snuggs-McCloud

Hi Deatrice, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to North Carolina from Washington, DC in October 2007. When I lived in DC, I would typically go to a makeup counter at the mall when I wanted to have my makeup done for an event or special occasion. After relocating, I convinced myself that I was capable of doing my own makeup.

I enrolled in an 8-week makeup course in 2011 with the hopes of learning a few tips and tricks. After completing the course, I practice what I learned on anyone that was willing to sit for an hour for me to do their makeup. I volunteered my services for hair competitions, fashion shows and benefit events for several years until I decided to enroll in cosmetology school.

After completing cosmetology school in 2013, I felt more comfortable expanding my range of services to photo shoots and weddings. Since that time, I have grown tremendously as an artist and industry professional.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Entrepreneurship runs deep in my blood. My great great great grandparents opened the first black owned business, (shoe store) in Downtown Tarboro, NC. Since that time, numerous family members have started and successfully managed their own businesses.

With that said, the business side of things has always come natural for me. My biggest obstacle was my fear of failure. It took some time for me to fully build my confidence and find my niche. Once I decided that I wanted to cater specifically to clients who loved soft and natural looks, I began to soar in the industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The majority of my clients are brides. I specialize in soft and natural makeup looks. I am known for catering to the, “I never wear makeup” client. I specialize in creating timeless and elegant looks. I am most proud of my professional growth over the years which has allowed me to mentor newer makeup artist and hair stylist. What sets me apart from others would be my amazing and diverse team. My team consist of 6 licensed professionals who can are extremely talented at both hair and makeup.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned that people really do enjoy virtual makeup lessons. In the beginning, I thought that nobody would ever go for such a thing. I quickly realized that I was indeed wrong. Some people feel more comfortable with having a one-on-one lesson in the comfort of their own home.
