Conversations with Demeter Delune

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demeter Delune.

Demeter Delune

Hi Demeter, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I grew up just outside of Raleigh in a small, conservative town. There wasn’t much in the way of sex education when I was in school, and what small amount we were taught was Puritanical in nature–based on celibacy alone and not pleasure at all. The older I got, the more I realized how much this was hurting people, not helping them. While I understand it isn’t appropriate to teach young children about orgasms, necessarily, there are age-appropriate ways to introduce pleasure into sex education from the beginning. After years of trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up, I decided to use my skills as a writer and experiences to educate others in the way I never was.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a sex educator, even in today’s modern society, isn’t easy. Sadly, there are still people who feel sex and anything relating to it should be kept hidden. However, the more we keep it secret, the less people learn what they need to know in order to derive pleasure for themselves and those they choose to share that with. Like with anything you choose to share online, I’ve had my fair share of detractors, and I don’t know if that will ever change, but teaching those who are willing to learn is worth it all.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a sex-positive educator and intimacy coach who uses personal stories and research-based writing to educate others. My work has been featured in online magazines across the globe and in print. Over the last four years of my career, one of my proudest moments was being featured in Petit Mort, a NYC sex worker-owned online and print magazine. Collaborating with globally recognized and award-winning adult toy companies is one of my favorite ways to add to educating couples and others in their sexuality. It’s a fun way to open your mind to new ways of pleasure advocacy while learning about our bodies.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I love working with other sex educators and companies who share the same goals of sex-positive, inclusive education. My work is available on my website at demeterdelune.com and on Medium at https://medium.com/@demetervdelune. Reading my work and sharing it with others is one of the best ways to support me.
