Conversations with Desmond Noland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Noland.

Hi Desmond , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started with art at the age of 5. I was inspired by my aunt Tammy who was painting a canvas of Queen Nefertiti while attending Philadelphia Art Institute. In that moment I knew I wanted to be an Artist. As of today, I travel the us doing art shows, conventions, comic cons, curating my own art shows, custom clothing, murals ,etc. I was featured on a tv show for sneaked designing. I’ve created art/hand painted items for the Migos,Anthony Anderson,Mack Wildz,Corey Holcomb,Dreamdoll and more celebs. I married my beautiful wife Courtney 2-4-23 and have a beautiful daughter Deja-Marie.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has not been a smooth road. I was accepted to DCAD(Delaware College of Art & Design. I went for about a week and came back home. I received a partial scholarship for art but it wasn’t enough to cover the full tuition. Instead of staying, I left & started my journey of figuring out how to be an artist and clothing designer. Next, becoming a dad at 19 was 1 of the greatest things ever. Having my daughter gave me some motivation to continue on w/ art after giving up on it for a bit. I would go on to travel to different states outside of Philly to try and gain more exposure. I eventually moved to Pittsburgh,Raleigh and now charlotte. Well, technically I travel full time. I have a storage unit in Charlotte to hold my art and other household items. I’m trying to chase my dream of becoming a full time artist.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to paint cartoon figures, abstract paintings & mixed media things. I specialize in illustration & abstract while telling stories through my art. I am known as Dez Tha Designer by name. I am known with my art for using fun colors and telling unique stories through my artwork. Im also known for my paint splatter designs. I am most proud of creating my own character Dez Diggity. Diggity is a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone no matter your race or religion. One day this character will be as big or bigger than the likes of Mickey Mouse. My character is to truly inspire people to never give up and be yourself. I believe what sets me apart from others is just simply being me. We live in a world where people worry too much of trying to be the next person or look like the next.I don’t care what people will think of my creativity and so many people respect me for that.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years I believe I will be a household artist known across the world with an annual Artshow similar to Art Basel for upcoming artist that will help aid the careers of many. I will obtain galleries most likely in Philly where I’m I originally from ,Charlotte & Miami. I see myself curating big art shows bringing that feel back like when Warhol,Haring & Basquiat had their run .
