Conversations with Eli Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Powell.

Hi Eli, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in eastern NC, on the inner banks. I have always had a love of being outdoors, which led me to want to capture it. At the age of 12, I saved up some money and bought a small action camera. This is where my passion for videography and filmmaking began. When I was about 18, I got a DSLR and started filming random passion projects, youtube videos, and eventually, weddings films. My journey with wedding films has been hard yet rewarding. I love being able to convey the emotions of peoples’ stories on film, and it’s an honor to be able to be a part of such a vulnerable moment in couples’ relationships.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I eluded to earlier, my journey has not been easy, but it has been rewarding. There have been many times I’ve thought about giving it up! One of my biggest struggles has been handling my stress while filming weddings, as there are so many things that could go wrong. My faith&trust in God has been crucial in helping me overcome these fears in order to manage my stress.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create wedding films. Wedding films are essentially short films that tell the story of couple on their wedding day. I am most proud of my ability to portray authentic emotions from peoples’ weddings. Many people say that they feel like they were there at the wedding all over again. What sets me apart from many people is my ability to tell deeper stories in my films when I am given the opportunity. Many wedding films are simply footage with a sappy song behind it. I am happy to say that my films are as deep and emotionally compelling as a couple will reasonably and comfortably allow me to go. The editing process takes a lot of work. There is a lot of trial and error involved, and you have to trust your gut to an extent to help you find the story in the footage.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I don’t go to Raleigh very often, so I don’t have a whole lot to say on the matter. However I do love the town I currently live in, Kill Devil Hills.
