Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Satterfield

Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in high school I assisted a family friend, who was a hair stylist. I enjoyed the industry and realized I could be successful in this field. Once I graduated high school I was unsure of what career would best suit me, so I thought I’d give cosmetology school a try. I ended up loving it and worked at a salon in a coastal North Carolina town. In 2021 I moved to Durham to advance my hair styling career. I shortly found my current salon home, Prickly Pear Salon!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I graduated cosmetology school in 2019 and was only working as a hair stylist for 6 months before Covid happened. I took this time to reflect and improve on areas in my craft via online courses. I moved to the triangle for a new salon opportunity. This ended up not being a perfect fit for me, but I took what I learned along the way and began working for my current salon, which has provided me the opportunity to embrace my authentic self. It’s amazing what you can happen in the right environment.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Behind the chair I specialize in low maintenance lived-in color and blonding techniques by creating a customized color for every guest. One of my main focuses is to ensure that the hair always keeps its healthy integrity when receiving any color service. Using organic, sustainable hair care products is just one way I do this. I have a passion for education and am dedicated to improving my craft so that I can help each person who sits in my chair create their hair goals. My ultimate goal is to create a genuine and relaxing environment for my clients while making you feel confident with your hair!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
A back bone of the salon that typically goes unnoticed are the Salon Coordinators. They greet and help establish new and recurring clients, manage appointments, make sure day to day operations flow smoothly, and so much more. My parents have always been supportive of my career and are always there for me no matter what. And last but certainly not least, my boss, Laura for encouraging me, seeing my worth, and pushing me to grow and become my best self.
