Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Hester.
Hi Erica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in the hair industry for almost 20 years. However, I always say my first color line was Mr. Sketch, and my first client was Barbie at 3/4. I have worked in almost every aspect of this industry. My most significant accomplishments have been owning a large commission salon for nearly 15 years. I am now owning my suite, The Boujee Hair lounge. A former Goldwell color educator. Currently, a MalibuC educator as well as an educator for the Balanced Stylist Society, led by my mentor and friend Sarai Speer aka The Platinum Giraffe. My passion lies in creating the perfect guest experience based on knowing the why behind everything I do and continuously pushing myself to be the best I can be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is a smooth road. It’s all in how you handle the bumps in the road. Though everything has been a learning experience, even the complex parts have pushed me harder to reach my goals continuously.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in blonde: all and any shade of it. I also specialize in hair and scalp health. I am a colossal hair science nerd and want to know the why behind everything I do. I am passionate about education and continuously learning to keep up to date with what’s new in the industry. I never recommend or use products; I don’t use them myself and have researched thoroughly. If I don’t know something, I will be honest and do my best to find the answer. I am most proud to have my suite, to be a part of two amazing education teams, and to be able to help mentor and educate others in my industry.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
So many people claim to be blonde specialists. It’s important to have consultations with your stylist. Ask questions! Your stylist should be able to explain the products they use. They should be asking you about your hair history. They should be asking about what water you wash your hair from. They should be asking about medication. There is so much more to being a hairstylist, blonde, or any color specialist than just being good at foiling and toning. Remember, we aren’t just applying color to your hair. We are working with chemicals that create specific reactions that give you your final color result. We are hair scientists!
