Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Dorsey
Imani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Some of the best things in life are born out of necessity—out of a deep, unshakable need to create something meaningful. That’s exactly how Black Girl Blessed came to life.
In 2020, I found myself at a crossroads. I was navigating my own battles with self-esteem, anxiety, and the weight of the world’s expectations. I needed an outlet—something that felt like mine, something that reminded me of who I was before life tried to tell me otherwise. That’s when I discovered the magic of polymer clay.
What started as a personal creative escape quickly turned into something much bigger. I began making earrings—bold, unique, and unapologetically beautiful pieces that felt like an extension of myself. When I shared them, I noticed something unexpected: other women saw themselves in my work. My designs spoke to women who, like me, were on their own journey of self-love, confidence, and rediscovery.
And just like that, Black Girl Blessed became more than just jewelry. It became a statement. A movement. A reminder that we, as Black women, are already enough—already beautiful, already powerful, already blessed.
Of course, the journey hasn’t been easy. Running a business while balancing motherhood, a full-time job, and a nonprofit is no small feat. There have been moments of exhaustion, self-doubt, and trial and error. But every challenge has reinforced why I started this in the first place. Black Girl Blessed is about more than just selling earrings; it’s about creating a space where women feel seen, celebrated, and empowered to show up as their full selves.
My vision has evolved, and I dream of expanding beyond online sales to a brick-and-mortar boutique—a space where fashion, creativity, and community intersect. A space where women can walk in and feel like they belong.
For now, I’m still building, still learning, and still pushing forward. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it’s this: when you move with purpose, everything else falls into place.
And Black Girl Blessed? It’s just getting stared.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building Black Girl Blessed has been a journey—one filled with passion, challenges, and moments of self-discovery. What started as a creative escape quickly grew into something bigger: a space for women to embrace their individuality and feel empowered through bold, handmade designs. But like any meaningful pursuit, the road hasn’t been smooth.
Balancing entrepreneurship with a full-time job, mental health struggles, and later, motherhood, meant learning hard lessons about pacing myself. Anxiety, depression, and ADHD have always been part of my reality, making focus and consistency a challenge. Just as I was finding my rhythm, pregnancy forced me to slow down. And after giving birth to my daughter, Charlie, I faced a new challenge—learning how to juggle my dreams while being fully present as a mom.
There were moments of doubt, where exhaustion and self-doubt made me wonder if I could keep going. But Black Girl Blessed was never just about earrings—it’s about creating a movement where women feel seen and celebrated. And if I’ve learned anything, it’s that pausing isn’t the same as quitting.
Every challenge has shaped me, every setback has taught me resilience, and every step forward—no matter how small—reminds me why I started. Black Girl Blessed is still evolving, just like I am. And that’s the beauty of it all.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Black Girl Blessed is about more than earrings—it’s about empowerment, self-expression, and creating a space where women feel seen and celebrated. I design bold, handcrafted polymer clay earrings that serve as wearable affirmations, reminding women they are already enough, already worthy, already blessed.
What sets my brand apart is the heart behind it. Every piece is crafted with intention, inspired by my own journey of self-love and confidence. I’m most proud of the impact—when a customer tells me my designs make them feel bold and beautiful, I know I’m fulfilling my purpose.
Black Girl Blessed isn’t just a business; it’s a movement—one that encourages women to take up space boldly, beautifully, and unapologetically.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If I could give one piece of advice to anyone starting out, it would be this: start where you are, with what you have, and trust the process. It’s easy to get caught up in comparison, thinking you need everything to be perfect before you begin. But perfection isn’t the goal—growth is.
I wish I had known that success doesn’t happen overnight. There will be setbacks, slow seasons, and moments of doubt, but every step forward—no matter how small—is progress. Stay consistent, stay true to your vision, and give yourself grace along the way.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to pivot. Your journey will evolve, and that’s okay. Keep learning, keep showing up, and remember: what you’re building matters. Stay the course, and trust that everything is unfolding exactly as it should.
