Conversations with Jamie Forbes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Forbes.

Jamie Forbes

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in The Bronx, New York.

I am a color pencil artist and tattooer. As a child I was always drawing. I found comfort and a sense of control when creating. As I’ve gotten older I’ve strived to deepen my understanding and exploration of it.

In 2012 I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, with an emphasis in drawing.

I’ve been residing in North Carolina for over a year now. The move has been nothing but inspiring for my creativity. My love of animals and nature have brought me comfort, curiosity, and inspiration. These creatures and their antagonists often find themselves as subjects of my drawings and tattoos.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With fine art, I’ve struggled with letting go of my work and selling it. I am always grateful to sell work, but I have a difficult time parting ways with it. Applying and getting accepted into galleries has also been a challenge, but one I will continue to strive to achieve.

Being a tattoo artist, in a way, has overcome these particular obstacles. Your work is out in the world for all to see.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is a mixture of colorful low-brow and surrealism. I absolutely love working with animal and floral themes in my tattoos and fine art.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid crisis was a restart for me. Finding a career that is exciting and fulfilling creatively has always been important to me but making that change can be daunting. I was unhappy with my job and craved an atmosphere to be more creative. After the lockdown I decided to become a full-time tattoo artist. This was something I wish I would have done sooner.
