Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’quan R. Phillips
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My interest in entrepreneurship began in 2014 after the passing of my sister (Jasmine Rayvon Phillips) one day before my high school graduation, June 13th, 2014. I officially started my first business (Jasmine Sickle Cell Warriors Foundation Inc.) in 2016 after officially becoming registered with the state of North Carolina. Then, I founded Ja’Quan R. Phillips Photography in 2017, now known as Ja’Quan R. Phillips Enterprise LLC. This enterprise houses everything Ja’Quan offers relating to ministry service, speaking engagements, photography, and youth advocacy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship isn’t a smooth road for anyone. It’s been a rough but rewarding ride. Finding funding for my nonprofit organization, building a community, and building my personal brand with Ja’Quan R. Phillips Enterprise LLC has produced its own unique challenges. It is also a hard balancing act working full time while trying to build and establish an empire.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Jasmine Sickle Cell Warriors Foundation Inc. is known for Empowering and Strengthening the Sickle Cell Community through Belief and Investment by hosting events within our local communities to educate and support our community members. While Ja’Quan R. Phillips Enterprise LLC is primarily known for photography, we are also expanding to provide customized goods (t-shirts, puzzles etc.) and offer speaking opportunities and business support to local small businesses.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is hard. If you aren’t willing to jump and deal with possible effects when you land then entrepreneurship isn’t for you. If you are in business, you must be willing to take risks daily. I’ve taken many risks in business. Some have landed successfully and some have failed. I took some risks in private and took even more risks in public. Some of these risks have even involved well respected people and known public figures. You have to be willing to take risks with a positive mindset. As my grandmother often says, “Take a lickin’ and keep on ticking”. Taking risks are not only a part of business. They are necessary to thrive in everyday life.
