Conversations with Jason Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Hill.

Hi Jason, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a rural area and always wanted to escape. I had to entertain myself a lot as a kid and I was either drawing or watching TV and a lot of times drawing characters from TV.

As I grew older, I would begin to explore other artistic mediums and eventually graduate from art school at UNCW. For the last few years, I have been attempting to be a full-time artist and my focus has been repurposing paper in a two-dimensional form.

Along with the mixed media work, I work with pencils, pen and ink, printmaking, and acrylic paints among other things.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been financial struggles and creative blocks. Also, Covid made it where you couldn’t show art for a whole year basically.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most known for my two-dimensional paper collage/mosaic style of art. I have self-doubt regularly about artistic choices during my process but when I’m finished with a piece of art I am extremely proud.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My family has always tried to support me even if they didn’t understand what I was doing. I also have friends that were supportive and a small group of artists that really helped me along the way.
