Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Boyle
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my tattoo journey in Texas in 2002, apprenticing under a skilled mentor. I completed my training there and stayed on for another year to hone my craft. After that, I transitioned to a busy North Carolina shop, where I gained practical experience through the sheer volume and variety of work. In 2011, I took a hiatus to focus on family. Returning to the industry in 2019, I joined a custom shop, where I had the opportunity to explore new techniques and further expand my artistic skill set. Now, in 2024, I’m excited to tattoo in my very own private studio in Raleigh, where I can provide a more focused and personalized experience for my clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it’s been especially smooth, no, but I find that most of what’s worth pursuing frequently isn’t. Traditional apprenticeships are notoriously tough, but I persevered and am grateful for my mentor’s guidance. Moving to a fast-paced street shop in Raleigh was a significant shift, demanding a balance between artistry and productivity, and that didn’t always sit well with me. Establishing SkinScribe has presented its own obstacles, but it’s been a very rewarding experience. This environment allows me to really lean into the work unfettered and better serve my clients. So there have been plenty of setbacks along the way, and I’m sure there will be more. But I see the challenges as an integral part of growth, and I strive to embrace them as opportunities.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offer custom tattoos in a clean and safe environment, empowering clients to contribute to the process as little or as much as they’d like. While I specialize in black and gray work, I also enjoy incorporating color, particularly in illustrative styles. I am proud that the cornerstone of my practice is a strong work ethic. I’m committed to humility and providing exceptional service to ensure client satisfaction. I think what sets me apart is the degree to which I prioritize meeting my clients where they’re at; I offer design advice while respecting individual preferences, and I think that’s important. I believe strongly in fostering collaborative relationships and adapting my approach to everyone’s unique needs.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m weird about furniture arrangement and spatial relationships. I think physical spaces can influence our creativity, mood, and focus, and a well-arranged room can foster a sense of harmony and productivity. I don’t know much about true feng shui, but I have an instinctive sense of how energy should flow in a space, and I’m a little obsessive about it. I’m not done until I’ve created an environment that is as functional and aesthetically pleasing as possible. And if that changes, I do it all over again. And if that doesn’t feel right, I might just switch it all back. I think my family finds this somewhat vexing, but they (very sweetly) accept it.
