Conversations with Jill Melyssa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Melyssa.

Hi Jill, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began after earning a graduate degree in business administration. A chance apprenticeship at a metal design studio in Brooklyn, New York marked a pivotal turn in my career path. There, I worked with copper, brass, and sterling silver, and refined techniques like vitreous enamel, soldering, and sawing.

It wasn’t until my two eldest children started college, 10 years later, that I fully embraced my love for metalsmithing and found my voice through sculptural jewelry.

I’m a sculptural jewelry artist and metalsmith whose work blends refined craftsmanship with bold self-expression. My work is about presence, each piece is a wearable sculpture designed to celebrate individuality, radiate confidence, and invite authentic self-expression.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia and raised in New York, my path to jewelry has been a journey of identity and creative discovery. Today, my studio practice is rooted in storytelling. My designs are shaped by architectural elements, the influence of couture fashion, and the emotional nuances of being human.

What sets my work apart is its soul. These are not accessories, they are declarations. Each piece invites the wearer to step into themselves, honor their story, and wear their uniqueness.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path has not been a smooth one. Being both an artist and an entrepreneur requires wearing many hats beyond my primary discipline such as marketing, sales, operations, and business strategy, all while continuing to create meaningful work.

There is also the vulnerability of consistently putting my work into the world. Rejection is a natural part of the process, whether through exhibitions, shows, or grant applications. Not every concept resonates in the same way, and learning to navigate that, while continuing to apply, refine, and evolve, has been an ongoing challenge.

Financial instability is another reality. Building a sustainable income through art takes time, persistence, and adaptability. It requires balancing creative integrity with practical business decisions.

Despite these challenges, the work is deeply rewarding. Each obstacle has strengthened my resilience, clarified my voice, and reinforced my commitment to this path.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a metalsmith, designer, and storyteller creating sculptural, one-of-a-kind jewelry. My work explores form, texture, and conversation through metal. I’m drawn to creating pieces that feel bold and expressive, but also carry a deeper narrative beneath the surface.

I’m known for work that is both sculptural and wearable, pieces that stand out, but also resonate on a more personal level. Collections like Under Impact reflect that balance, where the material shows evidence of force, but the structure remains. There’s always an underlying dialogue.

What I’m most proud of is the confidence I’ve developed in my voice as an artist. It’s been a process of refining not just the work itself, but understanding what I want it to communicate and put out into the world. That clarity has allowed me to create more intentionally and stand behind what I make.

What sets my work apart is its point of view. There’s a distinct language in how I approach metal, how it’s formed and designed and I think that resonates with people. The pieces invite connection. They allow the wearer to see something of themselves in the work, or to express something they may not have words for.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is a part of life and necessary when building a brand. However, I believe it’s important to do due diligence and still be cautious when taking a leap. When I have taken risks, more often than not, it has led to positive results.
