Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Lopez.
Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Mérida, Mexico, where I earned my architecture degree from the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY). During my studies, I had the opportunity to study abroad in both Panama and France, experiences that broadened my perspective on architecture, urbanism, and the relationship between design and culture. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong appreciation for thoughtful, context-driven design.
Before moving to the United States in 2009, I owned and operated a small design-build studio in Mexico, where I worked as both an architect and general contractor. That experience gave me a strong understanding of construction, materials, and the realities of bringing projects from concept to completion. After relocating to North Carolina, I had the privilege of working for several outstanding firms, including Szotak Design and ThoughtCraft Architects, where I contributed to a wide variety of residential and commercial projects. Those years helped me refine my design approach, strengthen my project management skills, and learn how to effectively guide clients through the architectural process.
Eventually, I founded Habanero Architecture with the goal of creating a more personal, collaborative, and design-focused practice. Today, I enjoy working closely with clients to create modern, thoughtful spaces that reflect their aspirations while reducing risk and simplifying the design and construction process. I’m fortunate to call Raleigh home, where I live with my wife and our two children.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges, from starting a business during uncertain times to building a client base, learning how to wear multiple hats, and continually adapting to an evolving industry. There have been setbacks along the way, but I’ve learned that consistency is far more important than perfection.
One philosophy that has guided me is the idea of getting just 1% better every day. Those small, incremental improvements compound over time. They have helped me become an expert in modern home design, refine my processes, strengthen my relationships with clients, and continually raise the standard of service I provide. I believe excellence isn’t achieved overnight—it’s the result of thousands of small improvements made consistently over many years.
That same mindset continues to shape Habanero Architecture today. I’m always looking for ways to innovate our practice, improve the client experience, and better serve our community. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new, and that commitment to continuous improvement is what allows us to deliver thoughtful, high-quality architecture that truly reflects our clients’ goals and aspirations.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, I help people turn ideas into buildings that work beautifully and feel sophisticated. Through Habanero Architecture, I’ve built a practice that blends contextual modernism with innovation, creating architecture that responds to its surroundings while giving every project meaning and a strong sense of place. I believe great architecture is about much more than aesthetics, it’s about creating spaces that improve how people live, work, and experience the world.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to the client experience. I see architecture as a collaborative process, where listening is just as important as designing. The best projects come from understanding our clients’ aspirations, values, and stories. Those stories become part of the architecture itself, adding authenticity and lasting value that can’t be replicated. Every project is unique because every client is unique.
With more than twenty years of experience designing residential and commercial projects, we’ve developed a process that combines design excellence with efficiency and thoughtful project management. We lead our clients through every phase with a concierge-level experience—from the first conversation through construction and the day they receive the keys. Our personalized approach, responsive communication, and clear strategic guidance give clients confidence throughout the journey, allowing us to create timeless architecture that not only looks beautiful but also performs exceptionally well for generations to come.
What I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us. Designing someone’s home or business is an incredible responsibility, and being invited to help shape that vision is something I never take for granted. Seeing an idea evolve into a meaningful place that enriches people’s lives is, without question, the most rewarding part of what I do.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making a meaningful impact on people’s lives through architecture. At the end of the day, we’re not just designing building, we’re creating the places where families gather, businesses grow, memories are made, and communities evolve. That responsibility is something I take very seriously.
