Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Atkins.
Hi Kiara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Kiara; born in Durham, NC but raised in Roxboro, NC (a small town outside of Durham). I am the Founder, CEO, & Creative behind Kei’s Point of View Photography & More LLC. But first, I am a mother, daughter, & fiancé to the most amazing people in the world. Being a photographer was never a part of my plan. But I can say that being creative and capturing every special moment has always been a part of my life growing up. My grandmother Doris and my aunt Drucilla were the first creatives to show me how you can make something out of nothing. But they always made sure we got a picture of it. My grandmother was overseeing our church’s decorations and floral arrangements, and my aunt was the director of activities and events at Eno Point Assistant Living in Durham, NC. From weddings, parties, and family reunions, my cousin Valencia and I were always somewhere nearby assisting. And, of course, taking pictures with a polaroid or throwaway camera, and eventually, my camera phone. Without knowing they were preparing us for the future “DIYs.” I had said for years that I wanted to invest in a “real camera,” lol. But never found myself doing it. To my surprise, one day, I received an email informing me that my fiancé had purchased my first DSLR Canon camera (“real camera”)! Then my mom invested in my “in-home” studio starter equipment! And my cousin helped me unbury the creative side by using nothing to make something. (Thank God for my village). Now 2 years later, self-taught, some online and in-person photography classes, trial, and error, expensive financial responsibilities, time, prayer & God, it seems my passion behind the lens has come to fruition! And here we are!
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has sometimes been challenging and challenging. I’m still learning every day and with every photoshoot. In the beginning, learning my camera settings was the most challenging task. And, of course, editing in Photoshop followed. Some struggles come with Thank god for YouTube, Ashleigh from Still Shots Photography, free online courses, and plenty of practice.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a freelance photographer & creator. I provide “in-home” private photo sessions, where clients can come to my “in-home” studio or welcome me into their home or chosen location to capture the best images from Kei’s Point of View. I shoot anything from individual milestone birthday sessions to families, events, branding, and much more. Above all, I provide a fun and enjoyable photography experience tailored to each client’s specific wants and needs, with the option of bringing the studio to you!
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Practice makes perfect! I advise any creative/entrepreneur to take their time and invest in their craft. YouTube is fun, but it can only teach you some things. Investing in your craft is about more than just purchasing the most expensive equipment or supplies. Investing in your craft consists of mentorship and classes that educate you on all perspectives of your craft.
