Conversations with Megan and Emily Lanning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan and Emily Lanning.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi! I’m Megan, owner of Sundae Sisters Co. I started this business to help my sister, Emily, with her work skills. Emily has Down Syndrome and just graduated from Panther Creek High School in Cary. Before covid, Emily participated in work programs at local grocery stores, but when the pandemic hit, she began to lose those work skills. So, I started Sundae Sisters Co! I design new to create all of our products, while Emily packages every single order! She writes every customer a thank you note which helps her with social skills. She also locates each item and packages it, even weighing each package to determine shipping costs! Now, we have new orders every day, and it’s Emily’s favorite part of her day!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was a learning curve in the beginning. As with all siblings, we have disagreements. Her disability doesn’t change that. We had to learn how to work with each other and communicate what each of us needs help with. In the beginning, we both made a lot of mistakes (and still do). We learned how to solve those kinks, through simple instructions and by being more organized. Now, Emily is a better and faster shipper than before!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One of our main hopes through Sundae Sisters Co is that other individuals with special needs and other employers will see the value in employing individuals with disabilities. Emily is such a vital part of my business and I couldn’t do it without her. I am so proud of how much she has learned in such a short amount of time and it’s exciting to see her doing something she enjoys.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to us is showing others that individuals with special needs are valuable. So many people see people with differing abilities as “cute” and a charity case. Emily has actually become a vital part of my business and I could not do it without her. We ship out orders fast and if I did not have Emily, orders would take me weeks to fulfill.
