Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Campbell.
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
What started as a simple craft night with a friend during COVID in 2022 has grown into something I never imagined. I began hand-painting earrings just for fun, but when friends and family started asking if I was selling them, things quickly took off from there.
Since then, I’ve had the joy of fulfilling custom requests and recently began hosting earring painting classes. These gatherings have become more than just creative sessions—they’re a space for connection, laughter, and self-expression. There’s something beautiful about watching women come together, slow down, and create something beautiful with their own hands.
This journey has grown into so much more than just earrings. My hand-painted earrings are a ministry. I’ve witnessed how art can open hearts, build community, spark conversations, and share God’s love in unexpected ways.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I made the decision to quit my full-time job in June of this year. Transitioning into running my art business full-time has come with challenges. There have been moments of uncertainty, financial adjustments, and the constant balancing act between running a business and being present for my family. This journey has shown me that my work meets a genuine need. People aren’t just buying a earrings, they are connecting with the meaning, creativity, and care behind them. My struggles have taught me resilience and helped shape me into a stronger artist and business owner.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in hand-painted, wearable art that bridges creativity and storytelling. My lightweight wooden earrings become a canvas for expression, allowing people to wear pieces that speak to who they are. I also specialize in earring paint workshops that are safe, joy-filled spaces where creativity and community meet.
I’m post proud of relocating from Grand Rapids, MI to Raleigh, NC in 2010. Moving to a new city was a big step, but it exposed me to fresh creative community and new opportunities to grow as an artist. That experience taught me to embrace change and take risks in my work, which are lesson that continue to shape my artistic journey today.
What sets me apart is my love for people. My goal isn’t just to teach people how to make earrings, I create spaces and experiences that help them remember that they are creative, capable and loved.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve found that connection is at the heart of being an artist. Building a supportive community is often the most meaningful way to network. Share you work, support others, and foster relationships that inspire collaboration and growth.
