Conversations with Monica Luviano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Luviano.

Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I became a licensed nail technician in September of 2012. I immediately started my own business called MoniMakingManicures in my hometown of Albemarle, NC. In 2015, my family moved to Raleigh, NC and I became employed at a podiatrist’s office where I stayed for over four years. My marriage was over by this point so as a single mother of three, I realized my children needed more of my time especially for events such as school trips and awards ceremonies. So in February of 2020, I put in my letter of resignation to leave at the end of that month. Little did I know, COVID-19 would strike and the world would go into quarantine. I decided to stay home with my children for the rest of the school year to help them with the online school challenges. By June 2020, the bands were lifted so I could resume work. On June 15, 2020 I got MoniMakingManicures up and running again. In the fall of 2021, my heart wanted to expand! I enrolled into an esthetics academy and in December of 2022, I officially became a NC certified aesthetician. I then rebranded MoniMakingManicures into Monica Made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! Anything worth having is worth fighting for. Building a business in a larger city than where I came from wasn’t easy. I had to put on so many more hats and learn different sections of the business such as marketing, accounting, scheduling, and problem solving just to name a few. I also dealt with the challenges of being a single mother as well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
This is the best lifestyle for me. I’ve never thought that I would be able to marry my loves together but somehow, this has become my reality! From a young age, I’ve loved art and creativity. I can do that with my profession. I’ve loved nails since I can remember, I get to work on those. The medical field has intrigued me my whole life! I have always been a detail oriented person so the fact that I can get down to the specks is exciting. I never feel like I am working!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’m so glad that I ended up in Raleigh. I’m a small town girl and Raleigh has that same feel. If you drive a little ways down the street or around the corner, you see the beautiful downtown Raleigh skyline. It’s the best of both worlds.

I would like more activities in Raleigh. Sometimes I feel like it’s not enough to do on the weekends or nights out with friends.
