Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Cox
Hi Natasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from a big family and we Immigrated from Jamaica. My father was always a jack of trades. There’s nothing he couldn’t do. He always stressed how fulfilling it was working for yourself. I loved beauty and the idea of working independently. I started braiding at the age of nine.My mentor was just 3 yrs older than me. We would sit outside & weaved the grass. This was my foundation. As I grew, my creative mind went to fashion designing and when I was in the 11th grade I submitted my portfolio to a designer and he threw it out & stated that fashion wasn’t for me, that I needed to be a Doctor, lawyer or Teacher. On that day I said, I would be the best Braider ever. I started working meticulously to perfect my craft in braides. I was captivated by the various styles and techniques in braiding but I wanted to be internationally known for my braids. I started honing my skills and created my pixie bob plaits. This technique opened up doors that I didn’t know existed. I’ve had clients travel from as far as Africa and throughout the islands and here in America. I’ve had folks from all walk life in my chair. This experience have allowed me to connect spiritually, emotionally & financially. I’ve gained a sisterhood where we are able to expose ourself & be vulnerable. There’s no judgements once you’re in my chair, we are each other sister keeper.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Over the last 30 years, I’ve faced many challenges. One of the toughest was dealing with bullying on social media. I’ve gone viral several times, and each time, I’ve been subjected to harsh criticism, threats, and negativity. The experience was emotionally draining and lasted for years.
Another significant challenge has been the need to continually reinvent myself to stay relevant in my field. It’s a lot of work to keep up with evolving trends, new technologies, and changing demands. As a business owner, I wear many hats—I’m the receptionist, the stylist, the bookkeeper, and more. Managing everything on my own can be overwhelming.
At times, it’s a struggle to maintain confidence and push forward, especially when the routine feels repetitive. However, I’ve learned the importance of staying focused and consistent with my craft, even during the hard times.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional protective hairstyle stylist specializing in braiding. What sets me apart from other braiders is my ability to treat each client’s hair as a canvas. I let my creativity flow to design styles that truly connect with my clients on a personal and professional level.
My specialty is creating micro pixie bob plaits, a unique technique where I use Kanekalon synthetic hair to craft tiny braids. This results in a lightweight, feathered effect that gives my clients a flowing hairstyle. It’s versatile, professional, and perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a formal event or an everyday look.
I take great pride in blending artistry with functionality, ensuring each style reflects my client’s personality while providing a polished, timeless appearance.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I truly believe that my creativity is my calling. Braiding has given me the incredible opportunity to connect with my clients on a deeper level. It’s where I find both peace and joy, and it allows me to be a listening ear and a source of encouragement. Through my work, I feel that God has given me a way to wholeheartedly connect with others and make a meaningful impact in their lives.
I embrace my role as my sister’s keeper, pouring love and care into every style I create. I am proud to be Braids by Tasha.
