Conversations with Reynaldo Barrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reynaldo Barrera.

Reynaldo , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as an artist began long before I became a tattoo artist. I was born in Cuba and attended the School of Fine Arts in Camagüey, where I was formally trained in painting, sculpture, and the visual arts. That education gave me a strong artistic foundation and taught me to see every piece of art as a way to tell a story.

I also come from a third-generation Irish lineage, and I’ve always felt a deep connection to my ancestral roots. That heritage naturally led me to explore Norse history, Viking traditions, and the values they represent—honor, resilience, courage, and respect for one’s ancestors. Over the years, this has become much more than an artistic influence; it has become part of my identity and the philosophy behind much of my work.

When I came to the United States, I had to rebuild my life from the ground up. Like many immigrants, I faced obstacles, but I never stopped creating. Tattooing became the perfect way to combine fine art with human stories, allowing me to create meaningful pieces that people carry with them for a lifetime.

Today, I am the owner of El Rey Art Tattoo in Charlotte, North Carolina. My studio is more than a place to get tattooed—it’s a space where art, history, and personal meaning come together. I specialize in realism and Nordic-inspired tattoos, drawing on my background as a painter and sculptor to create custom pieces that are both technically precise and emotionally significant.

Looking back, my journey has been shaped by discipline, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning. Every challenge has strengthened my passion for art, and every client who trusts me with their story reminds me why I chose this path. My goal is not only to create exceptional tattoos but also to leave a lasting artistic legacy through my work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Every meaningful achievement in my life has come through sacrifice, persistence, and the willingness to start over.

Leaving Cuba meant leaving behind my comfort zone, my professional background, and much of what I had built as an artist. Arriving in the United States, I had to adapt to a new language, a different culture, and the challenge of establishing myself in an extremely competitive industry. There were moments of uncertainty, financial pressure, and long hours of work, but I never considered giving up.

The tattoo industry itself is highly competitive. Success requires much more than artistic talent—you have to build trust, earn a reputation, continuously improve your skills, and adapt to an ever-changing market. I’ve always believed that every challenge is an opportunity to grow, so instead of seeing obstacles as setbacks, I used them as motivation to become a better artist and a better business owner.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency is more valuable than talent alone. Showing up every day, continuing to learn, and staying true to my vision has allowed me to build a loyal client base and a respected studio.

Today, I don’t see my struggles as something negative. They are the foundation of who I am. They taught me resilience, humility, discipline, and gratitude—qualities that I bring into every tattoo I create and every person who walks through the doors of my studio.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist, painter, and sculptor, and the owner of El Rey Art Tattoo in Charlotte, North Carolina. My artistic journey began at the School of Fine Arts in Camagüey, Cuba, where I received formal training in painting and sculpture. That foundation continues to influence every tattoo I create.

I specialize in black and grey realism, portrait work, and custom Nordic-inspired tattoos. My work is deeply influenced by my third-generation Irish heritage and my passion for Viking history, mythology, and symbolism. Rather than simply creating tattoos, I strive to tell stories through art—designing pieces that carry personal meaning and become part of my clients’ identities.

What sets me apart is that I approach tattooing with the mindset of a fine artist. Every composition is carefully planned with attention to anatomy, balance, contrast, and longevity. I believe a tattoo should not only look impressive on the day it’s done but remain beautiful for decades.

Beyond tattooing, I enjoy mentoring other artists, developing tattoo products, and creating projects that help elevate the tattoo industry. One of the projects I’m most excited about is Ink Battle, a reality competition designed to discover and mentor the next generation of tattoo artists.

What makes me most proud isn’t just the artwork I’ve created—it’s the trust my clients place in me. Every tattoo represents a personal story, and being chosen to bring those stories to life is the greatest honor of my career.
