Conversations with Rina Norwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rina Norwood

Hi Rina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“My design career began over 25 years ago in Nashville, TN. After moving to Charlotte in 2004, I transitioned from specialized decorative painting to full-service interior design. In 2018, designing my first short-term rental (STR) in Nashville revealed the potential of residential design in the burgeoning vacation rental market. This led to my role on the advisory board of the Vacation Rental Design Summit in High Point, where I shared best practices for expanding the design trade into STR. Eight years later, we’re expanding into the STR market by renovating a historic house in downtown Newton into a luxury inn, Hello Darling at Boutique Auberge. We aim to create curated experiences for stays and events. My experience designing numerous STR listings, including as an Airbnb Ambassador within the Airbnb pilot initiative, has been instrumental in developing a well-curated hospitality business alongside Rina Norwood Design.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the pandemic, which temporarily halted the market, presented significant challenges. Fortunately, our established relationships with repeat clients allowed us to shift focus to second home designs. Additionally, our strategically located, whole-house rentals provided crucial income, as clients within a 300-mile radius continued booking, mitigating the pandemic’s impact on our rentals. The commercial build-out of the inn required us to adhere to more stringent zoning, permit, and building codes than residential projects. Despite the obstacles, each challenge provided valuable lessons, enabling us to refine our processes and make wiser decisions.”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an interior designer, painter, micro-hotelier, and novice landscape designer- my mental therapy!!! With extensive training and practical experience, I’ve become a recognized expert in short-term rental (STR) systems and processes. I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge, guiding others to navigate the STR industry with both creativity and code compliance. What truly sets me apart is my commitment to empowering fellow designers, and from a guest perspective, creating meticulously detailed experiences that demonstrate thoughtful consideration.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Nashville was a significant design inspiration and provided a strong foundation for my understanding of diverse life and culture. Our neighborhood, nestled between three universities and within walking distance of Music Row, exposed us to musicians, international culture, and the vibrant music scene as a daily occurrence. Encounters like Johnny Cash ringing our doorbell for directions, or seeing a rising Keith Urban at a family friend’s restaurant, made us appreciate the unique environment in which we grew up. As a people person, I’ve always believed in the power of connection. I hope that even a simple ‘hello’ can positively impact someone’s day. I strive to make people feel valued, and I hope that my work and daily actions benefit others.
