Conversations with Soultry Sweetzzzz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soultry Sweetzzzz.

Hi Soultry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2020 I walk into a hidden gem in downtown Raleigh. An amateur burlesque show ran by Boom Boom Bathary that was so new and titlating that I had to stay and see what was up. During the show she had a competition and pulled 4-5 people on the stage and said you’re going to perform. I was nervous as you know what and the music started. Well that nervousness turned into confidence and I flourished. At the end I won the competition and Boom Boom Bathary offered classes or tickets and I had to sit for a quick second and realize I wanted the confidence and thrill I had so I asked for the classes. I performed all the way from ATL, TN, NC, VA and have no plans of stopping. When 2024 hit I had an encounter with a beautiful human I just could not resist named Naomi Dixx. I must say I was fan girling like crazy just with big admiration eyes. We talked and I fell in love with their energy. So towards the end of 2024 Naomi messaged me and said hey I have this idea and I want you to run it along with building your brand. I said yes of course and the rest is history. No I mean it was literal history. I was the only Black femme producer who ran an all POC show in the triangle and I am so proud to say that over and over. So we made history together and I made history as Soultry Sweetzzzz.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can certainly say it has been a wild ride. Started out thinking that this will just be a hobby and I will only do this on the weekend. I went in thinking that I would find a chosen family. I was thinking that this was only going to be short term. But with all the thinking I never thought it would come into place that I would have so much love and abundance in this community. Yes I have had bumps every now in then with formulating my brand and with people who thought they knew me but the only know Soultry Sweetzzzz or if they know what the meaning of The Velvet Titty was about but the one thing it taught me every connection, every plan and every thought was meant to happen so I could get to this very spot of love, community, and chosen family.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Velvet Titty is strength, resilience, power, knowing that no matter what you are and what you look like does not matter, we want you. We are a safe, sweet, and open space to express your many sides in a way that is comfortable to you. As for me I am a burlesque dance who wants what I got when I first came into the industry which is a safe space to show who I really am. I am known for being the calm cool and dramatic one lol but all in all I am known for my love and splits. I am so very proud of what The Velvet Titty represents. I wanted to create a show that showcases beautiful bodies and different spirits that are brought on this earth. The Velvet Titty represents love, freedom, and sexiness. Not only is it the only of its kind but Soultry Sweetzzzz has produced a show that made burlesque history in the triangle as being the only show ran by a black femme who only cast and works with POC

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success can be measurable in different things in show life. it is different for every aspect of The Velvet Titty and Soultry. The Velvet I want to be able to show love, light, freedom all while paying my artist. I define success as being able to make everyone in the show and attending the show to feel safe and seen. Success is to be able to shine a light on body types and POC who do not get to see that light more than our counterparts. Success is growth and seeing that growth throughout the stages of The Velvet Titty. Success is being able to allow everyone to show up authentically and meaningfully in their own life. As far as Soultry Sweetzzz, I want to show the love, support, light, and care that they experienced when they first started in burlesque. I want to be a burlesque name in the books and that is exactly what I have done now it’s time to take it out of the southern states I have performed and show my passion I have all over the world.
