Conversations with Tara Melvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Melvin.

Hi Tara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The National Society of Black Wedding & Event Professionals (NSBWEP) was born from both necessity and purpose. Founded by Tara Melvin in 2020, NSBWEP emerged after years of witnessing the underrepresentation of Black wedding and event professionals in industry leadership, media, educational platforms, and professional associations. As a respected industry leader, Melvin recognized a persistent void where the extraordinary contributions of Black creative entrepreneurs were often overlooked despite their undeniable impact on the profession. Amid the dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and a national reckoning on racial injustice following the death of George Floyd, conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion became impossible to ignore. Rather than wait for change, Melvin took action, creating The National Society of Black Wedding & Event Professionals, a national 501(c)(6) nonprofit association and the first and only association dedicated exclusively to Black wedding and event professionals.

Officially launched on June 16, 2020, NSBWEP was founded on the belief that representation matters, excellence deserves recognition, and community is essential for building a lasting legacy for future generations of Black wedding and event professionals. Today, the organization serves as a powerful platform for advocacy, education, networking, and economic empowerment, amplifying the voices and contributions of Black professionals throughout the wedding and events industry. With members representing 18 U.S. states and the Caribbean, NSBWEP has cultivated a thriving community of professionals united by a shared commitment to excellence, collaboration, and advancing the industry. Further solidifying its significance and impact, NSBWEP is recognized by the United States Library of Congress as a national association, underscoring its enduring commitment to preserving the legacy, elevating the visibility, and advancing the future of Black wedding and event professionals nationwide.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While NSBWEP’s growth and impact have been remarkable, the journey has been anything but easy. Building a grassroots national association from the ground up required unwavering faith, persistence, and a commitment to a vision that many people did not initially understand. Founded during one of the most challenging periods in modern history, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a national conversation about racial equity and inclusion, NSBWEP had to establish credibility, build trust, and create awareness simultaneously.

One of our greatest challenges has been visibility. Although NSBWEP has grown into the first and only national 501(c)(6) association dedicated exclusively to Black wedding and event professionals, with members representing 18 U.S. states and the Caribbean, we continue to encounter individuals throughout the industry who are learning about us for the first time. Much of our growth has been driven by word of mouth, relationship-building, and the passion of our members. Creating a truly national presence where NSBWEP is recognized and respected in every market remains an ongoing priority.

Another challenge has been helping people understand why NSBWEP exists and why building a national community specifically for Black wedding and event professionals matters. For many years, Black professionals were underrepresented in industry leadership, educational platforms, publications, and associations. NSBWEP was created to address that gap by fostering community, providing resources, amplifying voices, and creating opportunities for professionals who have historically lacked equal visibility and access. While many people embrace that mission immediately, there is still work to be done in educating the industry (our community) about the importance and value of our purpose.

Financial sustainability has also been one of our most significant and ongoing challenges. As a 501(c)(6) membership-based association, there are far fewer grant opportunities available to us than there are for traditional charitable nonprofits. As a result, NSBWEP has relied heavily on membership dues to fund its operations and member initiatives. Despite these limitations, we have been able to provide scholarships, educational programming, mentoring opportunities, and emergency support to members in need.

Looking ahead, our goal is to build a stronger and more sustainable financial foundation that allows us to expand resources, increase scholarship opportunities, create greater business development initiatives, and open more doors for our members. Many associations that have existed for 20 or more years have benefited from private donors, endowments, and affiliated foundations that provide long-term financial stability. That is where we aspire to be. We envision a future where NSBWEP has the resources necessary to invest even more deeply in its members, strengthen its national footprint, and continue building a lasting legacy for generations of Black wedding and event professionals to come.

Despite the challenges, every obstacle has reinforced why NSBWEP is needed. The road has not been smooth, but it has been purposeful. And every milestone achieved has been a testament to the resilience, dedication, and collective commitment of a community determined to create meaningful change within the wedding and events industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets NSBWEP apart from other associations, and what we are most proud of, is that we have never measured our success solely by membership numbers, events, or milestones. We measure success by the lives we impact, the businesses we elevate, and the community we have built. As the first and only national 501(c)(6) association created exclusively for Black wedding and event professionals, NSBWEP was founded to provide something that did not previously exist in our industry: a place where Black professionals can find representation, opportunity, support, and most importantly, a true sense of belonging.

For many professionals, attending industry conferences, networking events, and association meetings often meant being one of only a few people who looked like them in the room. NSBWEP was created to change that experience. Our members never have to wonder whether they belong, whether they have a seat at the table, or whether their contributions matter. The association was intentionally built for them. It is a community where Black wedding and event professionals can show up authentically, confidently, and unapologetically, knowing they are supported by peers who understand their journey and are committed to seeing them succeed. While our membership is exclusively for Black wedding and event professionals, we proudly welcome allies, partners, and supporters to participate in our events and celebrate our mission.

What truly distinguishes NSBWEP from other national associations is our unwavering commitment to investing directly in our members’ growth and success. We are proud that we offer resources and opportunities that are uncommon within the wedding and events industry. Through the NSBWEP Emerging Leader Scholarship Program, we have awarded (through strategic partnerships) more than $60,000 in scholarships, helping members attend premier educational conferences and access professional development opportunities that strengthen both their businesses and leadership capabilities. For three consecutive years, we have provided a complimentary formal mentorship program, connecting emerging professionals with experienced industry leaders. In addition, NSBWEP hosts a minimum of 24 complimentary educational webinars annually, ensuring members have year-round access to education, business strategies, and industry expertise regardless of where they are located. These programs reflect our belief that access to knowledge, mentorship, and opportunity should never be barriers to success.

We are equally proud of the culture of support we have cultivated. When one of our members suffered a devastating loss after a storm destroyed their storefront, the NSBWEP community rallied together and raised $2,500 to help support their recovery. Moments like this exemplify who we are. We are not simply a networking organization; we are a community that genuinely cares for its members and shows up for one another during both triumphs and challenges.

Another feature that sets NSBWEP apart, and one that we believe is often overlooked, is our commitment to member visibility. Our public membership directory includes each member’s photograph, name, business name, and a direct hyperlink to their website. While many associations either do not provide a member directory or offer limited information, NSBWEP intentionally puts a face behind the brand. This creates valuable opportunities for connection, brand awareness, referrals, and business growth. It is a powerful example of how we intentionally create visibility for our members, and to our knowledge, few national industry associations offer this level of exposure and accessibility.

We are also proud of the meaningful connections we continue to foster throughout the industry. Whether through our intimate networking experiences that bring members and non-members together or our historic Five-Year Anniversary Celebration, which took place simultaneously in five major cities, NSBWEP has created opportunities for professionals to build relationships that lead to collaboration, friendship, mentorship, and business growth. These experiences reinforce our belief that success is amplified when people come together to learn from, support, and celebrate one another.

Ultimately, what sets NSBWEP apart is not any single program or achievement. It is our holistic commitment to creating a community where Black wedding and event professionals can thrive. We are proud that, in just six years, NSBWEP has evolved into a trusted national platform that provides education, mentorship, scholarships, visibility, advocacy, networking, and genuine support. We are proud that our members never have to question whether they belong because they know they are among family. And we are proud that we continue to offer opportunities, resources, and experiences that are truly unique within the industry. Every scholarship awarded, every professional mentored, every business elevated, and every relationship formed represents the legacy NSBWEP is building for current and future generations of Black wedding and event professionals.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My greatest recommendation is simple: get involved, be intentional, and find a community where you truly belong. Too often, professionals view networking as the exchange of business cards or the pursuit of immediate opportunities. The most valuable networking, however, is rooted in building authentic relationships. The connections you make today can become your future collaborators, referral partners, mentors, advocates, and lifelong friends. Success in the wedding and events industry is rarely achieved alone; it is built through relationships, community, and a willingness to support others as you grow.

I also encourage professionals to join an industry association that aligns with their values and invests in their growth. The right association should provide more than networking opportunities. It should offer education, mentorship, resources, leadership development, and a community that challenges you to become a better professional and business owner. Membership dues should not be viewed as an expense, but as an investment in your future. The relationships, knowledge, and opportunities gained through active participation often deliver returns that far exceed the financial commitment.

Equally important, do not join an association and sit on the sidelines. Attend the meetings. Volunteer. Participate in programs. Engage in conversations. Build relationships before you need them. The members who receive the greatest value from any organization are those who show up consistently and contribute to the community. Networking is not about what you can get; it is about what you can give and how you can create meaningful connections that benefit everyone involved.

At NSBWEP, we believe that community is one of the most powerful tools a professional can have. We have witnessed firsthand how mentorship, education, collaboration, and genuine relationships can transform businesses and careers. Whether through scholarships, educational programming, networking experiences, or simply having a group of professionals who understand your journey, being part of a strong community provides support that extends far beyond business.

Ultimately, my advice is to find your people, invest in relationships, and never underestimate the power of community. In an industry built on connection, the relationships you cultivate today can become the foundation for your success tomorrow. And when you find an organization that not only welcomes you but also empowers you, educates you, and genuinely wants to see you thrive, lean in and make the most of the opportunity. That is where the real value of networking and association membership begins.
