Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Perry.
Hi Aimee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been creative and entrepreneurial, but my journey into fine art began unexpectedly. A friend and businessman invited me to be the director of a new gallery in Davidson, North Carolina. He was pursuing his dream, and I was brought in because of my background in sales, business, and relationships, not art. At the time, I knew very little about painting or the world of artists, but I was eager to learn.
While working there, I was surrounded by incredible artists whose passion for painting was contagious and it didn’t take long before I caught it. Quietly, I began experimenting with paint on my own, working under an alias so I could get honest feedback without anyone knowing it was mine. I’d bring pieces into the gallery, lay them on the floor, and tell visiting artists they were from a college student looking for a critique. Their feedback was invaluable. I’d take their notes, go home, rework the paintings, and repeat the process. I did that for two years before I finally had the courage to sign my own name.
From there, I kept learning from anyone willing to share their wisdom. My background in music helped me recognize the parallels between sound and color, rhythm and form, values and frequency, both using parallel language for expression, and technique.
I’m an introvert at heart, so time alone in the studio feels like home to me. There’s nothing quite like creating something that’s never existed before, whether that be a song or something straight from my imagination to canvas. That’s how this art thing all began.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, far from it. Over thirty of my fifty years have been filled with trial and error, failure and growth. It’s been a messy journey of falling down and searching for courage and vision to rise again. But I’m deeply grateful for it all. Without the struggle, I wouldn’t know the ache of deferred dreams or the depth of hope that follows. That tension has shaped not only my art, but my music as well, infusing both with honesty, heart, and resilience.
I’m learning every setback, in its own quiet way, becomes a doorway for new possibilities and new forms of storytelling that hold deeper purpose and greater soul.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create expressive, often spiritual works inspired by nature, emotion, and faith. My paintings blend abstraction and impressionism, using layered color and movement to evoke a sense of peace, wonder and story. I
I’m most proud of creating art that moves people emotionally and opens conversation about beauty, purpose, and the divine. I approach art as both a spiritual and creative calling, using it not only to express, but as a tool for story telling in a way that uplifts.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in a household where artistic expression was not only valued but encouraged. We were free to explore our talents and try many different things. From an early age, creativity became a natural part of who I was, first through dance, piano, and drawing, then through writing, which led to songwriting, singing, and eventually painting.
Over the years, I found myself drawn more to experiences than to things. Travel and exploring other cultures became my greatest teachers, expanding my perspective and enriching my creative voice. Those experiences acted as a living education, deepening the way I see, feel, and express the world around me.
Creativity has been the thread woven through every part of my life, shaping not just what I make, but who I am.
Today, along with painting my husband and I own Tradewind Studios, a music studio that composes and produces original music for film projects, documentaries and advertising.
