Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra McKenzie.
Hi Alexandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in a deeply creative family, surrounded by interior decorators, arts, and designers.. Conversations about fabric, texture, color balance, shape, and design were a constant at every family gathering. That environment shaped how I see the world—through color, harmony, and detail—and it naturally sparked my passion for beauty at a young age.
Originally, I considered becoming a makeup artist, but after high school I chose to attend cosmetology school and pursue a career in hairstyling. I spent nearly 15 years working in a salon in Eagan, where I built not only my technical skills but also meaningful, lasting relationships with my clients. It was a truly beautiful chapter that laid the foundation for everything I do today.
During that time, I also spent 10 years working with Bumble and Bumble, which gave me incredible opportunities to travel to New York City, Chicago, and throughout Minnesota for advanced education. I was able to learn from some of the most talented artists in the industry, expanding my knowledge in hairstyling, texture, and creative expression.
My personal life grew alongside my career. I met my husband at the salon—he was once a client in my chair—and today we have two boys together. After starting my family and navigating the changes that came after and Covid, I found myself craving something more creatively fulfilling.
That opportunity came when I had chance to start something new from the ground up. Being part of the design, vision, and culture from the very beginning was incredibly humbling and reignited my passion for creativity in a new way.
It was during this time that I was introduced to color analysis—and everything shifted. It combined everything I had always loved: color, design, and helping people feel confident. I began practicing color analysis about two years ago, and it has completely transformed how I see not only my work, but everyday life. From the way I approach hair color to how I guide my clients, it’s all rooted in enhancing natural harmony and bringing out each person’s unique glow and confidence.
I feel incredibly honored to connect with so many individuals through this work. Being able to educate, uplift, and help others see themselves in a new light is what continues to inspire me every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yes—there were definitely obstacles along the way.
During my 14 years in the salon, I experienced two maternity leaves, each time knowing I would lose some of the clientele I had worked hard to build. Rebuilding after each one required resilience and consistency. Then came COVID, which forced me to step away for months and later return to a completely different environment, rebuilding my business yet again.
At the same time, I felt a growing lack of inspiration and a sense that I was meant for something more—even if I didn’t yet know what that looked like. It was a challenging season, but looking back, those moments pushed me to grow, trust the process, and ultimately led me to new opportunities and a renewed vision for my future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairstylist of 17 years with a passion for cutting, shaping, coloring, balayage, extensions, and precision fading. What I love most, though, is the connection I build with my clients—being able to laugh, uplift, and create a space where people feel their best.
In addition to hair, I offer color analysis, helping clients discover the shades that truly harmonize with their natural complexion, eye patterns, and hair color. It’s an experience that allows people to see themselves in a completely new light.
Outside of the salon, I love spending time at home with my family. Creating a beautiful, welcoming space—alongside my very handy husband—has become my personal retreat and place to recharge.
I believe what truly sets me apart is my ability to go beyond just hair. I love offering thoughtful color guidance and having deeper, more meaningful conversations with my clients—not just about their hairstyle, but about their overall image and how they want to show up in the world.
It’s about helping them become the best version of themselves, inside and out. And while that transformation is powerful, it’s always paired with genuine connection, laughter, and shared stories along the way.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Family is a central part of my life. I’m very close with my large, local family, and I truly cherish the time we spend together. Whether it’s being at home or enjoying time at the cabin with family and friends, those moments are what keep me grounded and inspired.
