Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber King.
Hi Amber, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I studied Painting and Art History for my bachelor’s degree and then went to grad school to study Art Education. I was a K-12 Art teacher and decided to start my own business when I had my son. I taught many fiber art workshops (macrame & knitting) for years. Then during the pandemic I helped someone paint a mural in their home and things just grew from there. I love that I’ve come full circle and am painting again and soon will be teaching painting workshops. I still have a love for fiber art, but painting is always my number one passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hustle is real. Being a creative person can be so rewarding, but it’s a lot of work. The biggest struggle is sometimes not knowing when your next paycheck will come. You have to look months ahead and keep your eye on the prize. On the flip side of that, you’ll get so busy that you’ll yearn for the days when you didn’t have anything to do. It’s all about finding a good balance. Struggles will always happen, but that’s what makes you appreciate the good times even more.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a muralist that specializes in bold and colorful murals for homes and businesses. I love seeing the look of joy on people’s faces when they see my work. I’m most proud of my large scale murals I’ve done for the company Burrow, Welchel, Culp, and Moore in Charlotte, N.C. They’re bright, fun, and truly unique.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Being an artist is all about taking risks and thinking outside of the box. It was a big risk to quit my 9-5 job to go out on my own. It feels even more risky now that I’m a single mom. The pressure is ten fold, but I’ll do whatever it takes to keep growing and providing. I think taking risks is a necessity to be a successful creative entrepreneur. It’s how you learn and get better. I believe it’s important to always try new things.
