Daily Inspiration: Meet Barbara Younger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Younger

Hi Barbara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
On a lark in 2017, I took an acrylics painting class at our senior center in Hillsborough. I posted my paintings on social media so my friends could see what I was up to. I was surprised and delighted when they asked to buy them.

Today, I paint with acrylics, create collages and mixed media pieces, make gel prints, and dabble in alcohol inks. I’ve now sold over 800 works of art. I call myself an “Artist by Surprise” because, although I’ve always loved art, I never dreamed I’d be an artist, especially since I can’t draw well. In my working days, I was a published author. Now I use my writing skills to come up with intriguing titles for my art.

My artwork is sold at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop, Solgarden Eclectic Giving in Mebane, and WomanCraft Gifts in Carrboro. I also sell at local art fairs and festivals. I love talking to people! And of course, you can purchase art through my website.

I’m delighted that Mike’s Art Truck is featuring me at the Hillsborough Visitors Center this fall. I chose the Beatles for a theme and had a blast. On September 6, “Songs of the Beatles: Folk Art by Barbara Younger” will open with forty paintings and collages, each based on a different song. There’s a reception on September 14 from 2 to 4 PM. Please come! The show will run through December.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although I’ve had some bumps, it’s been a very happy road. Because my work has a naïve style, I’ve faced some condescension, but all in all, the local art world has been encouraging and welcoming. It’s been a challenge finding more places to sell my work, and I’m looking for representation in Durham, Raleigh, and beyond. Since I love to paint shorebirds and sea creatures, I’m anxious to find a beach gallery, too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My art reflects what’s quirky, whimsical, and festive about our world. People tell me they feel happy just looking at it. Children are drawn to my bright colors and bold designs. I’m honored to know my work now graces their nurseries and bedrooms.

I keep my prices very moderate because I want my art to be affordable. I’m glad to make just enough to buy more paint and canvas and to take art classes, which I’ve really enjoyed.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Please visit my website (Barbara KYounger.com), follow me on Instagram (instagram.com/barbarayounger), and come to the wonderful shops where my art is sold. My Beatles show will go live on the Mike’s Art Truck website soon (mikesarttruck.com). You can order a painting or collage through the site if you can’t come to the actual show in Hillsborough.
