Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bethea.
Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As far as I can remember, I have always had an exuberant amount of energy. It was damaging and shameful at times to myself and for my mom as well, especially when she struggled as the primary parent raising me in my younger years… But that energy was actually insight into the makeup of my character and nature; it just needed to be channeled correctly. In my freshmen year at college, I started recording everything around me with this digital camera my parents had given me, and my main subjects to record were the girls I hung around on my dorm floor. I loved capturing a moment and playing it back immediately, but then one day, I stumbled across an editing program on my laptop, and for the first time, I saw how I could edit all of the footage I had into one video with songs and titles and it blew my mind! I had so much fun editing that I did not know I edited all night with about 10 minutes to get to class. I just knew when I got back after class, I was going to crash, but the excitement was too much and I jumped right back on my computer to continue editing. But the moment I knew, what I didn’t fully understand, was when I showed the completed edited video to the girls at the dorm, and upon seeing their reactions, I found my passion.
The moment was priceless!! It ignited a fire in me to want to create more videos for people to react to and experience. A moment that encouraged me to commit to the transition from nursing to being a film major was an inspirational conversation I had with my cousin Anita, who told me to go after my desires and take responsibility in finding a college that best suited what I was looking for, no matter what. The journey of film school, graduation, starting a business with my best friend from Norway, working odd jobs in and out of the video field, finding a full-time job in my field of study that truly values and appreciates me, to trying again to start my own business. My story is not only about the journey of finding my passion but also learning that I have been equipped from birth with the energy needed for all of the challenges of starting and successfully running a business. This is one of the ways my energy was meant to be channeled, which is why people call me the “video ninja” because I am everywhere!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. There have been many times when I haven’t felt completely supported by my support system at the level I needed. It has always been challenging when the people closest to me don’t fully understand the risk I want to take when it doesn’t seem to be the most secure route. One challenge in the earlier stages of my life was transitioning from a four-year college where I was financially set with newfound freedom and on track to study nursing.
Since the film college was smaller with no dorms, I found myself back home living with my parents, which presented a new set of challenges. My parents weren’t completely confident with the new path I was on and would also have to pay monthly out of pocket for me to attend college. Another challenge while being married is having the confidence to make business investments/moves that would financially affect my family’s day-to-day life, which has made my husband uneasy at times, so support felt like pulling teeth. One of the biggest struggles I have had is being my own worst critic. Comparison of where I am not or where I think I should be, and struggling with a perfectionist mindset while learning that growth is part of the journey and is never-ending.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a filmmaker that provides video consulting and I specialize in creative cinematic videos like weddings, celebrations, events, etc; I am most known for being on the move. If I have a camera in my hand, I am not standing still. I am most proud of the cards, texts, phone calls, and emails I receive from well-pleased clients, and even prouder of the projects I feel unqualified for but take on and conquer!
I’m not sure I could really describe something that sets me apart from others, but that’s because what I value is what I have also heard others value as well. I do believe that everyone, including myself, has a unique way of doing any one particular thing. I take pride in adding value to my services and my main mission is telling a client’s story. I have an adaptable style and am all about giving the client an experience that only I can give them. I have my own fingerprint, unlike anyone else who may do or offer the services that I do.
The one thing I rarely hear talked about, if ever, is wanting to be a client’s preferred videographer for life! I want to be a client’s preferred videographer to the point of becoming an extended part of the family. Meaning, I love when I am able to film multiple events for the same client, like filming a couple’s proposal, then their engagement shoot, and their wedding, and their baby’s one-year-old birthday party, the same baby’s graduation celebration, the couple’s family reunion, etc. I aim not to film one-off events for clients but to know Uncle Jeff and grandma Mary.
How do you think about happiness?
Inspiring and motivational information. In a world where people forget that they are unique by nature, so everything becomes a competition, I admire people who provide full transparency in their faults and success so others can avoid and achieve the same or even better results. I myself have benefited personally and in business from people not just giving me enough information to buy in to a product or service they offer, but simply because they wanted to see me thrive while avoiding as many potential setbacks as possible.
