Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Jones.
Hi Cameron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Art has always been a passion of mine. I think it began with my love for cartoons. I would always sketch my favorite cartoon characters in my notebooks. As time went on, I accumulated comic books and became a fan of the storytelling and artwork. When I was younger, my grandfather, who was a landscape designer, would take me to work with him. I was able to see the connection between art and nature through those experiences. This sparked my interest in becoming a landscape designer. I graduated from North Carolina A&T with a degree in landscape architecture.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been easy, but adversity often leads to a lesson. Self-doubt can be a common obstacle for creative individuals. Being vulnerable and putting your artwork out there requires some courage. There is no absolute right or wrong, and I believe that most creatives/artists may experience a lack of direction. You just have to keep in mind that no journey is the same, and its power in that. You have the power to create your own path.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My job is essentially to connect people and nature. Residential design is my specialty. My job involves meeting with clients and discussing their outdoor vision. What types of plants do they have a preference for? Favorite colors? What plans do they have for utilizing their outdoor space? After gathering their ideas, I create a detailed plan that is within their budget. Bringing a plan from paper to life is something I love. My uniqueness lies in my ability to assist in plan installation beyond software design. My work has included planting trees gardens, building decks, and dry creek beds. What makes me proud is seeing the clients’ expression when it’s all done. Reflecting on what I do today in my career began with those days working with my grandfather.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
If you’re starting out in anything you love, remember why you started. That will keep you grounded in your “why” during tough times. Utilize all the tools available in your preferred profession or hobby. Research videos, read books, experiment, and practice your craft. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to become a student in every aspect of my craft. As an artist, it’s common to think that all you need to do is draw a picture and post it. It’s important to learn how to market yourself. Be as diverse as you can in your craft.
