Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Harvin.
Hi Clara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Although from the outside it may seem my business is just in photography, I think of “By Clara Elizabeth” as being a friend to each client I encounter. This mentality comes from joyful times when I’ve been sustained by friendship and times of hardship when friends felt few and far between. I have always loved to take pictures and have been in charge of documenting every family event for as long as I can remember. Turning this passion into a business has been the unexpected realization of a dream. Photography is about capturing the genuine emotion of a moment. I enter every shoot remembering that having your picture taken is a very vulnerable experience. Your nervousness and even your brokenness are welcome here. That vulnerability is strength in my eyes. Capturing pictures where you can genuinely feel the moment’s emotion makes my heart truly happy. I want to make you feel beautiful and comfortable behind my camera. More than anything, though, I want to make you feel like my friend. Each of you is perfect just as you are, and my goal is to help you see the beauty the rest of the world sees.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not been an easy one. However, it is one that I would not change for the world. Throughout high school, I struggled with an eating disorder. This led to isolating myself from the ones I love, depression, anxiety, and more. These experiences have shaped and molded me. They allow me to have tons more compassion for those around me. They also led to this business. I realized that one product of my eating disorder was hiding from all pictures because I despised how I looked. I had a minimal view of pictures almost entirely based on someone’s appearance. On the other side of my experiences, I have found a way of working in photography to capture the joy of relationships, the beauty of someone’s inner world, and the significance of where they are in their lives. Photos are here to help us capture memories, and I want to give you the gift of capturing the beauty in your everyday life.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Above all, my work is rooted in my connection with my clients. I enjoy building relationships through planning, shooting, and delivering a client’s images. I’m working on my area of strength when capturing expressions that reveal the emotion within a moment. Working with individuals, couples and families allows me to create images full of personality and the joy of connection within relationships. On the technical side, my photography is characterized by natural light and a sense of motion. I love natural settings that bring bursts of light and atmosphere around my subjects and meaningful settings that tell a part of a client’s story. In shooting and editing images, I seek a delicate balance of light, color, subject, and environment that is the perfect image.
What does success mean to you?
I love when new clients seek me out because they admire my images, and I especially love when clients return to me again and again because they enjoy the experience of working with me. I hope my photographs become a meaningful part of your story and that you reflect on them and remember a positive experience of capturing a significant time in your life’s journey.
