Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ Paul Cordts

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Paul Cordts.

Hi DJ Paul, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started doing high school and middle school dances and started picking up weddings. At one point, I was doing most of the proms and high school dances in Guilford Alamance and Forsyth county. When music and lyrics started to change, I left the events with high schools and middle schools and focused primarily on wedding events. I have been doing only wedding events since 2005.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were many struggles working with the school system. Kids wanted one type of music and the administration wanted another. I remember doing one event at a local high school and the kids were having a really great time. There were no supervisors or chaperones or anybody out maintaining control of the kids. Kids were dancing!! The principal of the school came up to me and told me I needed to change the music. This was around The year 1998. I asked the principal what she would suggest for me to play, considering the kids were having such a great time to the music I was playing. She said play “Rock Around the Clock”. I played at the dance floor cleared and kids began to leave. The whole problem with School Events was that they never had enough chaperones to tell the kids what was right and what was wrong. The administration simply wanted to blame bad dancing on the DJ. Wedding Events are so much easier, we get to decide everything from start to finish, timeline, music, introductions. I really enjoyed weddings and the satisfaction of seeing folks getting married and being so happy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I am one of North Carolina’s most awarded independent Wedding DJs. I don’t represent any other disc jockeys. Many of the companies out in the marketplace now represent 4 to 10 other disc jockeys. So I’m really competing on a scale against many more individuals that have a significant advantage. I’ve been able to maintain my position in the marketplace, I believe because I develop a consistent product. I started in arts in junior high and high school and then I took that Farther by going to North Carolina school of the arts. When I left NCSA, I joined a company Greensboro called Audio Unlimited. We were a Sales and touring sound and lighting company for Alabama, Crystal Gayle, Tina Turner, New Edition, Jackson 5 and many other groups. I have also owned a number of nightclubs, worked as DJ in many nightclubs, which has given me so much experience with providing music to many diverse groups and persons. I have received so much technical training and experience from working and learning in these environments, I used that experience in my business now. I am fortunate to have such a diverse background.

What matters most to you? Why?
My clients being satisfied with the service that they have received for me at the end of the evening.

There’s nothing better for business provider than to have satisfied clients. I feel that’s pretty much across-the-board. If you can provide a great product and the people that you’re giving that product to feel like they are overly satisfied or received more service than what they expecting, that’s the best. Everyone that receives a product or service wants to feel like they got their moneys worth. I believe that all of my clients feel this way after my job is done. I always try to give a little bit extra that makes the client feel special. Nothing better than hearing from your client at the end of the day, “Paul, You are awesome”.
