Daily Inspiration: Meet Esha Hickson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esha Hickson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It started in 2015, I just got back from Cuba with Baba Chuck Davis. He was very close to my God mother and we got to phycially connect during a Summer at American Dance Festival. When I returned, I had the desire to spread my dance movement with other dancers. I traveled back and forth from NYC on a transit bus for several sessions with a group of professionals who are still dancing and performing to this day. Many of them have transitioned into corporate or other professional avenues but I admire them deeply. I also see them taking classes and continuing to grow as artists. After teaching, I soon traveled to California where I taught other professional artists and took classes as well to further develop myself as an artist. When I returned to Raleigh about three years ago, I partnered with a non-profit , the DEA Educationa Foundation, where the mission is to protect youth from drugs and crime through movement. I continue teaching when I can but most importantly my direction now is to continue developing as an artist; where that be studying more dance culture, traveling, and creating. For those who don’t dance professional but love to groove, and stay healthy, I have a brand titled The SexeFit Brand that mostly focuses on fitness and cardio. I specialize in contemporary, street jazz, modern, and hip-hop! I also love African dance for that is the foundation to a lot of my moves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think my biggest hurdle is separating myself from the dance; identity wise. Wanting to branch out and develop within other mediums is difficult because my entire life Ive ben associated with Dance. This makes it hard to revamp or re-emerge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Im most proud of connecting different people together through dance; whether that be my choreography or my classes I love the community aspect to what I do. I think what makes me unique is the power and control I bring to the dance floor.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Raleigh is my hometown. So there is no place like it. I think it has a long way to go culturally but something is surely special about the cozy vibes and mysterious energy our city can have.
