Today we’d like to introduce you to FAT. They and their team shared their story with us below:
FAT is an award-winning rapper and black illustrator born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. An oddly charming sonic mix of a cup of Rick Ross, with a tablespoon of E-40 and a dash of Weird Al. FAT started writing lyrics at the early age of ten years old as a way to express himself outwardly. “For a long time, music was my journal”. FAT makes music for those in touch with the human experience.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an artist and entrepreneur, it definitely has not been a smooth road, but that’s part of the journey and fun. There have been many challenges, from creative challenges like writers’ block and finding producers, engineers, promoters, etc. to work with; logistical challenges like figuring out tax rates, shipping methods, and production costs; time challenges like juggling parenting, a job, shows, interviews meetings and more. But it’s all been an exercise in critical thinking and problem-solving, and I truly enjoy taking on new challenges.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in a combination of hip-hop music and visual art for musicians and small businesses. Namely digital art, sketch art, and graphic design. Lyrically, I’m most known for substance-based music about my life, with other stories and experiences mixed in. Artistically, I’m more into erotica and nerdy things (comic books, anime, video games). I’m most proud of continued growth and experience. I often think back to where I came from, and I’m in awe at what I’ve learned and built over time.
What makes you happy?
Accomplishment. For example, outside of art as a parent, when I’m able to get my son that one item, he wanted the most for Christmas, when I finish a semester of school, or when I have an “aha!” moment after I’ve been trying to figure out a challenge. Completing a task and getting results, even undesired ones, is a rewarding experience for me.
