Daily Inspiration: Meet Genesis Doubledee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Doubledee.

Hi Genesis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Creativity has always been around me, from drawing unproportioned “self-portraits” in 4th grade to creating hair bows for my daughter now – I’ve always had an “oh, I can do that” attitude. I was born and raised in Raleigh to high-school sweethearts who were into the arts in some capacity, and it was no surprise that I would love the arts as well. Next to music and sports, I’ve always found myself in a creative space. Growing up, I either wanted to be a teacher or an Obstetrician, but I always had this feeling in my heart that I wouldn’t care what I did specifically; I just wanted to help people. I attended and graduated from the most outstanding high school in Wake County, Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School. I found myself there, and most importantly, I found my voice. Being there made me realize that maybe being a doctor wasn’t quite my jam anymore, but knowing that I wanted to help people and had a love for athletics, I discovered athletic training. I enrolled at the sloping hills and verdant green of North Carolina Central University, where I set out to become an athletic trainer with my newfound discovery. I started the program and liked it, but something still wasn’t clicking for me. I began searching for other avenues and was soon introduced to NCCU’s student radio station, AudioNet. I soon set out to change my career path and start my journey as a Mass Communication major my junior year. I met my most impactful professors, Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton (Dr. Mac), Brett Chambers, Bruce dePyssler, and Dr. Lisa Paulin. They all introduced me to a new dynamic world of visual communications. I was encouraged to follow my passion, and Dr. Mac specifically encouraged me to get to the root of my dreams and push forward. You see, I gave birth to my incredible son during this transition from athletic training to mass communication, and let’s say things were a bit rough at first. My then-boyfriend, now-husband, and I worked overtime, two, sometimes three jobs to make sure our son was taken care of and fulfilled our mission to graduate college…on time. We did just that! In 2015, I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, concentrating on Broadcast Media.

Fast forward to 2021; I’m a graduate student at Syracuse University (projected to graduate December 2021), a wife to my better half, Deion, and a mom of 2 beautiful children Dawson (7) and Parker (2).

I see the world as a vast collection of Pinterest boards, and nature has undoubtedly been my biggest inspiration. As a self-taught graphic designer and, as I mentioned earlier, one who loves to help people, I’ve found my groove in scratching the creative and being helpful to others itch by providing a service to others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having a child as a college student is not an ideal way, you’d imaging beginning your career. I didn’t have much time to figure out what city I’d like to start a new journey in or what company I could see myself working at, and I had to graduate and find a better job with better pay quickly. I tried to move so many times, getting denied every single job. I remember one day applying for 23 jobs and getting rejected by all of them and thinking I would never be able to work in my chosen field. I was determined to only apply for work in the communications space. My faith is what held me up during that time of making just $12/hour, a baby in daycare, and a hungry belly. I found myself defeated, depressed, and quite honestly, less and less determined by the hour. I was slipping into an “oh well, this will just be my life” mood, and it took me running into an old friend from high school to remind me of who I was, whose I was and what I was capable of to get me to put a little pep in my step and keep applying. Eventually, I earned an opportunity to be a marketing specialist at a start-up. Although challenging, I credit all of my foundational knowledge to this company and its leadership (shoutout to Brad Carroll at Dakno Marketing and Taryn Heins).

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I would love to connect with more creatives and transform Jackson & Porter to a large agency where we’re a one-stop-shop for all branding needs that would include photography and videography. No big changes just yet, but I’m hoping to have a larger team by summer 2022.
