Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahmyah Garrett.
Hi Jahmyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Jahmyah better known on all social platforms as “myahthebeauty”. I’m originally from Germany but I grew up in Prince George, Virginia kinda a small town. But I guess having the kind of parents I did they never allowed me to let a small town stop me from dreaming so big.
Being able to have such a childhood, learn to play the piano, and be involved in art all throughout school, gave me a creativity that now as adulthood I feel can change the world.
I went on to graduate from Norfolk State University with a bachelor’s in political science. I wanted to become an attorney and still do but it just seemed like as hard as I tried to pursue that I kept being called to do something else.
It may sound silly but sometimes I think content creation was my calling all along. That this will open up those doors I’ve always visioned myself walking through. And it took me a while but I’m glad I finally got here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not lol. I remember graduating college and thinking to myself during the ceremony “bruh I don’t know what I’m going to do”. The fear of letting down my family started to haunt me that day.
I felt like if I didn’t become a lawyer, they’d think I was a failure, and that constant fear ate at me for 3 years. So bad I actually fell into waves of depression because I just couldn’t understand why life post-graduation wasn’t taking off for me.
I spent so much time trying to make myself fit something that just wasn’t meant to be at that time that I lost myself in my own anxiety for a long time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think what brought me through that dark time was my creativity. It saved me almost. When I felt my lowest I created and poured into my business which took off at the beginning of the pandemic.
But having that business required a lot out of me lol, and by a lot, I mean social media. It gave me the opportunity to become an influencer and create content that literally touched millions. So that it was I’m most proud of, not the number or anything like that.
But the fact that so many people found comfort in me, learned from me, or just took something from me in 39 seconds. I’m proud that women all over the world feel like they have a homegirl in me that maybe they don’t have or need.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Wow lol, I was, talkative! Very caring though I always wanted to make sure everyone else was okay and happy even as a small child.
I have always known what I wanted even if it was what I wanted to wear or how I wanted my hair that day it was specific lol. My opinion mattered to me as a kid and that’s all I needed lol, But honestly, I remember being super confident as a kid.
My family instilled that in me so early man. I loved who I was from the time I was maybe 6 and could understand what that meant.
