Daily Inspiration: Meet Jakara Vincent

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakara Vincent.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story has a bit of a rocky start. The years was 2018 and I was recently diagnosed with cancer. Fearing my world would soon come to an end i dove into crafting to keep me busy during those long chemo days. During this time I was introduced to waistbeads by a family member and from that moment I felt that I found my calling. I made a set for myself and my cousin, then a friend and another friend and next thing you know I am now offering a full variety of beads and other accessories and have been in remission for 5 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning your own business is NOT an easy task. There are so many things to do and when it’s just you it rests all on your shoulders. I have found that marketing is the biggest hurdle to conquer. Without good marketing no one will visit your site and you don’t make sales. With the new age of social media and so many platforms to sell on its, hard to cultivate media to find your true audience. Word of mouth is great but there are millions of people that could be potential customers and you have to find a way to reach them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am well known for my variety of handmade tie on waistbeads. I am most proud of cultivating a brand that embraces all people from different walks of life. I value being able to appeal to the my customers in more than one way. I love that people find beauty in my wearable art. The thing that sets me apart of any other person doing something similar to me is MYSELF! I believe my personality draws people into my table and the art does the rest. People are always amazed when I tell them that each item was handmade by myself. The volume of items I have is probably the shock factor. Who knew these two hand me could make so much?.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Do your research on the type of business you want to start. Make sure there is a demand for your offering in your area. But ultimately just start! Nothing will ever be perf and there is always a learning curve to every thing. Always be teachable as well, just because your successful doesn’t mean you can’t learn and grow.
