Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalissa Grier.
Hi Jalissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Jalissa Grier, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and the owner and Medical Director of Bella Sol Medical Spa in Winston-Salem.
My path into functional medicine and aesthetics actually started with my own health. I was diagnosed with prediabetes, and going through that process myself, digging into root causes instead of just treating a number on a lab report, changed how I saw medicine entirely. I realized how much of what we call ‘aging’ or ‘just how I feel’ is actually metabolic dysfunction that can be identified and reversed with the right data and the right plan.
That’s the foundation Bella Sol was built on: combining functional medicine, real lab work, optimal ranges instead of just ‘normal’ ranges, with aesthetics, because how you feel on the inside and how you feel showing up in your skin aren’t separate conversations. We’ve grown into a full practice covering hormone health, metabolic optimization, and aesthetic treatments, all working together.
We’re celebrating five years of Bella Sol this August, and honestly, the thing I’m proudest of isn’t any single treatment or launch. It’s that we built a place where people come in feeling unseen by traditional medicine and leave with an actual plan, and a team that treats them like a whole person.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Operationally, a lot of what exists at Bella Sol today didn’t exist when we started. There was no playbook for a lot of it, protocols, training programs, commission structures, so I had to build most of our systems from scratch while also seeing patients and running the clinical side of things. That meant a lot of long nights figuring out how to standardize things properly instead of just patching problems as they came up.
Staffing has been its own journey. Finding and training the right people, especially estheticians who fit both the technical bar and the patient experience we want, takes time. I’ve learned to build real onboarding and training programs rather than hoping people figure it out on the job, but that took some trial and error.
We are also on our third physical addres for the business – but I am still looking for the perfect fit, which serves as a reminder that even when your clinical work and patient relationships are solid, the business side can throw curveballs that have nothing to do with medicine at all.
And underneath all of it, I am managing my own health, the thing that shaped why I do this work in the first place. It’s one thing to coach patients through root-cause change. It’s another to hold yourself to that same standard while running a business.
None of it broke us. If anything, every one of those struggles is baked into how we operate now, more structure, better systems, more resilience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Bella Sol Medical Spa, I practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and what I specialize in is the intersection of functional medicine and aesthetics, treating them as one conversation instead of two separate businesses.
On the functional medicine side, that means comprehensive lab work: hormone panels, metabolic markers, thyroid, nutrient status, gut health, and interpreting them against optimal ranges, not just ‘normal’ ranges. A lab can come back technically normal and still tell us a person is heading toward a problem. I build real root-cause plans around that: supplement protocols, nutrition, sometimes referrals, always with a rationale the patient actually understands.
On the aesthetics side, we offer everything from injectables and laser to facials, PRF, and skin health treatments, but even that work is grounded in the same philosophy. Skin health is downstream of metabolic health, so treating both together gets better results than treating either in isolation.
What I’m most proud of is that we’ve built systems, real training programs, protocols, standardized documentation, so that quality of care doesn’t depend on any one person having a good day. That’s not the flashy part of running a practice, but it’s the part that actually protects patients.
What sets us apart is that combination: a provider-led practice that treats aesthetics as clinical medicine, not just cosmetic services, backed by real diagnostics and a team trained to match that standard.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
A few things come to mind. The book that really kicked things off for me was Good Energy by Casey Means. It reframed how I think about metabolic health, that so much of chronic disease, fatigue, skin issues, hormone imbalance, traces back to cellular energy and metabolic function. It gave language to things I was already sensing clinically and personally.
For ongoing learning, I’m a big Huberman Lab listener. It’s a good way to stay current on the science behind sleep, stress, hormones, and performance, translated in a way I can bring straight into patient conversations. Also love Kayla Barnes-Lentz because she tests things out on herself, (as do I), and is transparent about her wellness journey in a digestible way.
I’m also a heavy Substack user. I follow several colleagues in the functional medicine space there, it’s become one of the best places to track what other practitioners are seeing clinically and how the field is evolving in real time, versus waiting on slower, more traditional channels.
And I’ll admit, social media too, even though I try to limit my screen time. It’s genuinely useful for keeping up with the trends and questions my clients bring up almost daily. Whether I like it or not, it’s where a lot of the conversation is happening.
