Daily Inspiration: Meet Jean Josephus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Josephus.

Jean, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked as an independent Hairstylist with a fashion background in Carrboro, NC, in 1994. I opened my salon “Jean Josephus Hair Design” in 2000. Relocated it twice. The last 20 years have been in my present location. It is a creative, welcoming space unlike any other. I love doing hair and really enjoy serving my diverse clientele over the years. Everyone seems to enjoy coming to the salon, and we take pride in “Making their Day.” I am also an education addict when it comes to Hair Design and Beauty.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has never been a smooth ride. But I have never given up and have enjoyed the entire experience. Every day is a different day and a new beginning. When I just listen to my clients, they give me clues as to what they are looking for. They mostly just want to be heard. I experienced a setback nine years ago when four staff members left to open their own salon, but I recovered. This is a common occurrence in the salon business. I have maintained a good relationship with all four stylist who now all have their own salons. This business is constant. The quest for beauty never stops. There are no mistakes that need fixing, only adjustments. Sleep right, eat right, and remember that the client is really, really, really looking forward to their hair appointment.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a salon owner who also works behind the chair. I specialize in creative hair color and hair cutting. My years of experience and the creative consultation, service, and delivery of my vision to each and every client sets me apart. I give 100% ,100% of the time.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was the creative and crafty one in the family. My parents owned the Cooks Forest Inn in Cook Forest, Pennsylvania. We served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I inherited a strong work ethic at an early age. I learned how to make an old-fashioned and a Manhattan when I was fourteen. I was interested in fashion and went on to Duff’s Business School and majored in Fashion Merchandising after high school. I then went on to Pittsburgh Beauty Academy and received my Cosmetology License. I have traveled the East Coast working for resorts and private Beach Clubs, including The Everglades Club in Palm Beach, the Dunes Club in Rhode Island, and The Basin Harbor Club in Vermont, before picking out Chapel Hill in Ran McNally’s Places Rated Almanac and landed right here in Chatham.
