Daily Inspiration: Meet Jenni Farrow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Farrow.

Hi Jenni, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It began as a hobby when my kids were small. I messed around in the kitchen until I figured all the ins and outs of chocolate candy making. I developed over 60 filling recipes and tried them out at the local summer market. They went over well enough that I entered my favorite, Sweet Potato Crunch, in a contest with Our State Magazine and won the food and drink category for the Made in NC Awards in 2018. That award launched my hobby into a small business. Today, while most of my business is through my website, I attend a handful of popup markets in Raleigh/Durham. I’m proud to be a part of the Got to be NC family and use as many farm fresh ingredients as I can.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main obstacle has been learning the business side of things. I am a “creative” through and through, so that sort of linear thinking was my greatest challenge, But I did it, with help of course from the SBTDC and other mentors. The other main obstacle has been the rising costs of goods. The price of chocolate has more than doubled within the last 3 years, so finding the right pricing balance can be challenging.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We make niche artisan bonbons, candy bars and toffees using real semi-sweet fair trade chocolate, farm fresh ingredients and simple packaging. I make the toffees and the fillings, I toast the nuts. We opt to use the best ingredients, vs the cheapest. We’re unique because we like make excellent candies accessible. In person, you can simply buy one piece and that candy is going to be SATISFYING. You don’t feel like you need to eat one after another, but you can … I won’t judge! We’re also known for our unique flavors such as Sweet Potato, Brown Butter Sage and Smoked Toffee. And of course, if you’re brave enough to try our novelty flavor, Collard Greens, you get a sticker to mark the achievement. We like to have fun!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I just keep in close connection with my friends and family. I do love the ADHD Chatter Podcast.
