Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Gould.
Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My education and training were wholly scientific. I am a Botanist, I worked in a corporate science job for almost a decade. I have zero training or experience with woodworking, and my artistic endeavors had only included crude murals on walls of rented apartments.
One day, I thought of a thing I would like to see on my wall, so I bought tools, wood, stain, and I made that thing. Then, I did that about ten more times, opened an Etsy shop, and they started selling. A year and a half after opening my Etsy shop, I gave the two weeks’ notice at my corporate science career and took the plunge full time into being an artist.
That was October 2014, since then, I’ve managed to increase my catalog to over 100 pieces, I’ve sent art all around the world to 4 different continents and 11 different countries. I’ve managed to support my family of 4 on an artist’s wages, and I am my own boss. I still pinch myself weekly to make sure I’m not dreaming,
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road, but we’ve always managed. Not knowing how much money is coming in, and when, can be very stressful. I took a leap of faith in myself, and my abilities to make appealing artwork.
Now, every month that same faith sustains me to keep going, keep creating, and know that since almost every single piece I’ve ever made has sold, that there IS a desire for my work, and that if I’m patient these works will be sold eventually.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work wholly with wood. I select various types of wood, cut them, sand them, stain or paint them, and arrange them in a pleasing fashion, that’s it. 90% of the work is the mental construction of what I want to see, the rest is just the execution of the vision.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how thriving and alive Raleigh is. I do wish it were in a more progressive state, however.
