Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Sailorquardian.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I dreamt of 2 things; becoming a gamer and social media influencer. My Dad and my cousin fed into my gaming addiction the most as I saw them gaming all the time, and wanted to be just like them. Growing up I really enjoyed the Nintendo DS, PlayStation, Xbox, Lego Ninjagos, and anime. In my freshman year of high school I met a few gamer friends that encouraged me to start playing a new battle royale game at the time called ‘Fortnite.’ I fell in love with the game and invested many hours towards it. My friends and family motivated me to start streaming on the platform Twitch because of how many hours I invested towards gaming. I started streaming and the purpose of my streams were to provide an escape from reality for others. However, it wasn’t streaming that made me become an Influencer. In 2019, COVID-19 put everyone in lockdown which granted me the perfect opportunity to pursue my social media dreams. Many transitions for me were occurring at this time, I had just switched gaming platforms from console (PS4) to PC. I also discovered a new and my first, first-person shooter game that was still in BETA called VALORANT. I had a lot of fun with this game and was told I sound like the voice actor of VALORANT agent Jett voiced by Shannon Williams. I decided to stream my voice trolling and uploaded it onto TikTok with the voice actor noticing me and the video getting over 143K+ views. I started to think TikTok might be a good route for me and decided to pursue it. I started by putting out all sorts of content related to Fortnite, VALORANT, gaming, and anime. I realized my anime videos started to succeed a lot more than my gaming videos. After spending so much time on TikTok, I discovered the creator Junna also known as nintendo.grl, and fell in love with her videos. Her account was my escape from reality. At the time, she was creating satisfying videos using snacks from all over Asia with an anime, ASMR, and gaming vibe to it. The snacks featured in her videos are snacks I grew up eating as a Vietnamese and Chinese girl. I then decided I wanted to try making ASMR-related content just like Junna’s. On a Sunday night, October 25th, my family decided to order sushi which absolutely changed my life. I decided to film my sushi dinner showcasing it with a herbal jelly drink and dorayaki, without thinking I posted it onto TikTok and shortly after my notifications were starting to blow up. The video hit thousands of views within seconds, and then hundreds of thousands. Not even 24 hours later, the video reached over a million views with comments from people all over the world. This was a crazy experience for me as I’ve always wanted to succeed on social media. I had a blast responding to all the comments I received and spent all night replying to them non-stop. My parents were so supportive of it, and the family and I all kept refreshing my TikTok account to see how well the video was doing. I started to film more content in the same niche with my videos receiving hundreds of thousand views. Less than a month later, I uploaded my most viral video which got me to where I am today. The video being me showcasing mochi, choco boy, coffee pudding jellies, and canned taro bubble tea reaching over 18.5 million views. After this video, I started to notice my followers spiraling up.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle I faced was my first 2 and a half years in high school (before COVID happened) because I had to go into school everyday. I’m a passionate girl and I love to share my passion by being overly passionate about everything and I got bullied a lot in high school. I feel like a lot of people at my school were very different from me and didn’t understand me in a way. I can’t complain much though, I had to survive 3 and a half years of going to high school in-person, then completed the rest online. My family being nothing but supportive really helped me! I have the most supportive parents and sisters ever.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an 18-year-old (birthdate: 01/31/2003) girl from Canada, I’m an influencer in the gaming, anime, and kawaii ASMR niche. I create videos providing an escape from reality for others. I think one thing that’s always made me different from others is standing out. Like I mentioned previously, no one at my high school understood me and I think that’s because of the way I like to represent myself, my interests, and how much I showcase my passions.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
I feel like the biggest risk I took was being overly-optimistic about becoming an influencer. When I had less than a thousand followers, I was throwing all my eggs into one basket banking on gaining more followers. This really held me back from my full potential in school and at the time, I should’ve really reflected upon my actions. However, I can say it did work out in the long run. I was just an ambitious girl haha.
