Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lennert.
Kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started cooking when I was studying Art in the Chicago area and fell in love. My husband and I started a business called “Moveable Feast” in Geneva, Illinois. We had a cafe, specialty market, bakery and deli cases. We catered all sorts of parties from intimate dinner parties to weddings to large corporate events. We catered for boats and aviation (most famously for Oprah WInfrey). She chose us for her 2006 Favorite Things list for our brownies. After a a 3 year stint in Detroit where my husband built custom surf and paddle boards, we moved to the ocean and start Spoonfed Kitchen, a beach cafe, specialty market and catering company. In 2025, we launched our signature granola to a larger market and are anxious to see it grow!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is never easy, but it is rewarding. We started our businesses because we love to cook and entertain. We love hospitality and delighting guests with our innovative menus and presentation. While it is hard work, we expect that. It is the hidden things that can be more challenging in a start up….managing people, equipment, bookkeeping, pivoting during slow seasons or economic downturns, COVID and uncertain times. You have to dig deep! And keep a sense of humor.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are hands on with every event. We’re a small but mighty team. Many of us come from various backgrounds to fill in the gaps in a very organic way (some in the arts, business, hospitality, merchandising, pastry, fine dining) We build on each other’s strengths.
We’re busy but we don’t take on more than we can handle.
We have a tight knit group of party planners, rental companies, florists and venue owners that really support and work together.
We are commited to using the best ingredients and support many local farms and artisans. We work with local fish purveyors, our beef is from a NC regeneritive farm, local honey- they are part of our team.
Our food is flavorful and thoughtfully put together. Most everything is made in house with the exception of a few breads. Our presentations is lush and abundant with carefully curated serving pieces- we don’t look “rented”. We pride ourselves on custom creating our events to match the vision of our clients!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is having our customers come back time and time again. That most of our clients are referrals that trust us from the start of the process makes everything run smoother. Of course watching people have a great time at a party or overhearing someone say, “this is the best…..” feels great. Watching members of our team grow into themselves as cooks, pastry chefs and service staff feels gratifying as a leader. Being able to pivot in hard times and remain open, true to our mission of “serving wholesome delightful foods to feed your lifestyle” is humbling and spurs us on!
