Daily Inspiration: Meet Kyra Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Edwards.

Hi Kyra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Montclair NJ to Raleigh with one mission in mind- to be a trusted leader in Raleigh’s growing natural hair market. I started in Knotti By Nature Hair Salon in August of 2016 with no clientele, no family, no connections, just the will and the drive to push beyond my own comfort to make a name for myself. Within six months, I was fully booked, and by eighteen months, I partnered up with a fellow hairstylist and opened The Coil Connection Hair Salon.

Now, a little over three years later, I am ready for the next plateau, opening my own luxury natural hair salon by myself. My goals are the same, to continue making a name for myself, but now I’m ready to share my dream with a salon family, and provide our clientele with a unique luxury experience that they rightfully deserve. November 2021, Naturally Crowned Hair Salon will be open for business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have always been a huge fan of the idea that when you do something you love, it isn’t hard work. However, I would be dishonest if I said this wonderful journey didn’t come without bumps in the road. Learning how to properly run a business, navigating difficult clientele, and working/life balance is always a challenge.

I think the most important thing I learned is that you have to work through them all one step at a time- avoiding or pretending the obstacles aren’t there certainly will not alleviate the issue.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a licensed cosmetologist, I specialize in locs. More specifically, coloring locs. Locs have very unique properties that can make coloring them quite difficult, and I pride myself in mastering the techniques, even creating my own to properly and beautifully color loc hair.

In addition to treating, styling, and maintaining clients’ hair, I also hand-make hair products. As of right now, I have four different products to address some of the specific needs in the natural hair world:

1. “Grease My Scalp” – All-natural oils to include. peppermint, lavender, and tea tree to help balance, nurture, and soothe. Helps decrease dandruff, and other flakes.
2. “Grow Like A Weed“- A sweet-smelling hair oil to promote hair growth and shine.
3. “Stop The Itch“- A spray that consists of witch hazel and other ingredients to stop scalp irritations – perfect post-workout!
4. “Water Me Please!“- A daily water-based leave-in conditioner that moisturizes and keeps hair healthy and protected from outside elements.

One thing I am most proud of is my loc book, titled “The Only Loc Guide You Will Ever Need.” This eBook covers all things lots- from the history to frequently asked questions- Now available to download on amazon kindle!

I’m sure if you took a poll of some of my clientele they would tell you that I am known for being the “Fairy Loc Mother,” who gets them in and out quickly, and efficiently. I am most proud when I walk into a store, or some other public place and someone says “Fairy, Fairy!” It always makes me giggle, but it lets me know that I am doing my job correctly- that my name, my work is positively impacting my community.

What are your plans for the future?
After the grand opening of my new salon, I plan to grow and maintain a highly skilled and professional salon team. In 2022, I will be re-starting my classes on various techniques and later on into the year, begin the process of opening a natural hair school. I would also love to begin public speaking on various topics surrounding the wonderful world of hair.
