Daily Inspiration: Meet Marisha Mathis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisha Mathis.

Marisha Mathis

Hi Marisha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I thought I wanted to be a defense attorney for youth involved in the Juvenile Justice system. I decided I didn’t want to go to law school during my senior year in college. I decided that I wanted to pursue a Master of Social Work degree instead. I obtained my MSW and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Serving various populations, such as children, families, veterans, the elderly, and those experiencing homelessness, has helped me understand systems and the needs of others. I use writing and presentations to help educate and combat mental health stigmas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. One challenge has been a lack of resources for the people or populations that I serve. Another struggle has been the stigma in the mental health community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I author writings to help others understand components of mental health such as treatment, diagnoses, myths, self-care, coping skills, and etc. I also facilitate conversations and presentations surrounding mental health.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family, friends, and mentor are supportive. They challenge me, ask hard questions, hold me accountable, and allow me to bounce ideas off them.
