Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Pitts.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, photography has always been my hobby. When I was around 12, my grandparents bought me my first nice digital camera and I remember them taking me to the local gardens to photograph flowers, which were my current favorite things to photograph!
Then when I was sixteen, I got my first DSLR for my birthday and I fell even more in love and spent as much time as possible learning everything I could on how to make my images better and better. In high school, I took a film class where I first learned just how magical film could be. It really gave me a solid foundation of skills and I still credit a lot of my success to what I learned in that class.
After high school, I went to college, got a degree in Sociology, and kept up with my hobby a little less. When I graduated college, I found out that a degree in Sociology doesn’t pay much and turned to photography to bring in some extra cash. Then, I discovered the magic of shooting weddings. It was something I never thought I’d want to do but ended up truly falling in love with it.
I get to spend the day with people on the best day of their lives, and it doesn’t really get much better than that. I love romance and love and emotion and now my job literally is about capturing those things. About 5 years ago, I went full time with photography, and a year later moved from Florida to North Carolina now I am in a place I love doing what I love and I could not feel more grateful!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s been “smooth” because owning a business is hard. But, when you are doing what you love, it’s worth the struggles. I think one thing that I didn’t realize was how lonely being a small business owner could be.
I spent a few years in an office before working for myself and I loved being around people and making friends with my co-workers. Now, most days it’s me working from home alone and my coworkers are my two cats and Netflix! Covid has obviously made that even harder – let alone all the other hurdles it has presented. When you are self-employed it is also very hard to create a healthy work-life balance.
While it’s nice to be able to set my own business hours and do things like edit when is convenient, it also makes setting boundaries very difficult. I can’t remember the last time I took a vacation that didn’t involve me emailing clients, plus when you shoot weddings, your weekends are no longer your own which makes traveling and spending time with family and friends difficult!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Wedding Photography is where my heart is. I am a hopeless romantic at heart and love meeting couples during one of the most exciting times of their lives and getting to document it for them. I have so many clients that have turned into friends and think that is just the most special thing ever.
I believe weddings are about marriage and declaring that love and celebrating that with your friends and family and always want that to come through in my imagery. My goal is to create timeless images that truly stand the test of time. I try and shoot and edit my images with the look of film in mind for that reason and stray away from any trendy editing.
When my client’s grandkids are looking at their wedding album one day I want them to be drawn to the emotions of that day not distracted by trendy tones that are no longer in style. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve honed my craft enough that it is able to be my career and that even 8+ years later I am still in business.
Being a single woman who has built this business on my own has not always been easy, but it is so fulfilling and I am proud of the fact that things are still continuously growing and expanding business-wise.
Any big plans?
I am currently working on updating my website and brand.
It is a huge undertaking and is taking up a lot of my time. It’s so hard to choose images to showcase because I love them all! I also am hoping to get back to traveling more now that it’s become a possibility again.
Photography has taken me all the way to Paris and I can’t wait to get back to Europe!
