Daily Inspiration: Meet Rachel Simon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Simon.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from Emerson College with a B.A. in writing, literature, and publishing, I started my career in journalism as an entertainment editor at Bustle. I stayed there for several years covering movies, music, TV, and more, interviewing dozens of A-list celebrities. I left Bustle to pursue editorial positions at Mic and HelloGiggles, before deciding in 2021 to pursue freelance writing full-time. I now write for outlets including the New York Times, Glamour, NBC News, Vulture, and many others. In August 2022, I published my first book, “Pickleball for All: Everything but the ‘Kitchen’ Sink” (Dey Street). I also teach writing with Gotham Writers Workshop and Redbud Writers Project and create personalized crossword puzzles through my Etsy business YourCrossword.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many ups and downs, as with every career path! When I left Bustle after over six years, for instance, I was still determining my next career move and struggled to find a position that fit my interests and goals. And more recently, when I began freelancing full-time, it took me a few months to figure out my ideal schedule and workload, especially when I factored in teaching, crosswords, and working on my book.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write about various topics, ranging from celebrity culture to mental health to beauty and fashion. I love this variety, as I get to explore all of my interests and pursue my curiosity. I specialize in personal essays, features, and interviews, but I love it all! I also love creating personalized crossword puzzles and have constructed custom puzzles for over 300 customers.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Raleigh’s variety – no matter what you’re looking to do, there are so many great options, whether in regards to high-quality restaurants, entertainment venues, parks, hiking paths, or anything else. I do wish Raleigh was closer to water, though!
