Today we’d like to introduce you to River Monae Cameron.
Hi River Monae, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into burlesque began with a foundation in the disciplined world of ballet and pointe! The precision and slow, intentional movement I learned there set the stage for my later explorations into the freedom of jazz and the expressive depths of modern improvisation.
However, my path took an unexpected turn when surgery forced me to stop dancing between the ages of 14 and 18. This break, though challenging, only intensified my passion for dance. When I returned, I was more determined than ever, eventually finding my calling in the alluring world of burlesque.
Now, six months into producing, I have managed to start two residential, monthly events: a large-scale burlesque and drag open stage show and a smaller, more intimate “pop-in.” that just so happens to be a sapphic night. My success in burlesque is a result of my dedication to networking and fully immersing myself in the scene. By attending countless shows, both performing and observing, I honed my understanding of what captivates audiences and how to create a seamless production. This blend of formal training, personal experience, and keen observation has shaped me into the performer and producer I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s a unique joy in seeing my cast and artists feel taken care of and at home on stage. Of course, there have been struggles—navigating both good and challenging shows, and experiencing the spectrum of audiences. But those experiences, both the highs and lows, have helped me grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For the past nine years, I’ve been a veterinary technician specializing in stable to critical patients—a demanding full-time role requiring constant focus. By night, I transform into “The Jessica Rabbit” as an artist and producer in the burlesque world. I’m incredibly proud of the family and community we’ve built within these shows, finding joy in each performance and ensuring everyone has a great time. What sets me apart is my ability to apply critical thinking from my veterinary work to producing, ensuring our shows are entertaining, safe, and affirming spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community.
What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I was adventurous, curious, and kinda funny (lol). I was always dancing and performing, whether it was at school or in classes. My days were packed: school from 7 AM to 2:30 PM, followed by dance classes from 3 to 7 PM almost every day – unless I had ROTC commitments. I was, and still am, eager to learn more every day, always seeking new experiences and knowledge.
