Today we’d like to introduce you to Spechel Mitchell.
Hi Spechel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey as a content creator in 2019. It began as an outlet for grief and as an opportunity to practice doing my own makeup after my makeup artist – my best friend- moved away. It then turned into a brand. I was sharing my makeup videos/tutorials on Facebook and Instagram and so many women were showing interest with learning how to do their makeup as well. But I noticed a theme with responses. Many women would make comments about wishing their makeup looked like mine or not being confident about how their makeup came out after application. This led me to create Set Your Beauty Standard. I wanted women to be encouraged to take control over what beauty meant in their lives and what would be the beauty standard they lived by. Years have passed now and I’ve shared my loc journey, my beauty journey, and parts of motherhood, wife hood, and life in general. I think in 2025, I’m in a transitional phase with my content and what my brand means, so I’m excited to see where I end up when this year comes to a close.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a content creator in the beauty space, it is definitely filled with twists and turns. I think most creators feel this same way. Content flops, content we didn’t expect to go viral does, the negative comments, or the constant overwhelming feeling like you have to be filming or editing something all the time. I could go on and on, but I believe my biggest struggle in the past 2.5 years, has been remembering my voice. As my life has transitioned since starting this journey, I’ve had a difficult time syncing where I am in life now with what my brand voice used to be.
It was all about confidence, serving looks, being confident in however you chose to do your makeup and hair and not caring about what anyone else has to say. Now, I feel like I’m the target audience for that brand voice. I’m the most insecure I’ve ever been since becoming a mom. I struggle with the postpartum changes I’m experiencing and even the life transitions. It’s easier to create content when you only have your own schedule to consider, but when you add a husband and a toddler to the mix, it gets a lot more difficult. So in this season, I’ve struggled the most because I’ve struggled to hear my own brand voice these past few years and it has slowed my progression and productivity when it comes to my brand.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a content creator, I primarily create beauty related content that includes makeup inspiration/tutorials, skin care routines, product reviews, and the most popular pillar – my microloc journey. I’ve gained thousands of followers on Instagram and subscribers on YouTube all in support of my microloc journey which started in July of 2020.
Through all of my life transitions in the short 6 years of creating, I’ve maintained some level of consistency. I started this as a single woman and I’m now married with an almost 2.5 year old. My audience has seen me start dating, get engaged, married, pregnant, step into motherhood, and become a homeowner. I pride myself on making sure I still show women it’s possible to still take care of yourself through any and all seasons.
What were you like growing up?
I think I’ve always been creative and a DIYer. I remember in high school sitting in my bathroom, trying to learn how to braid my own hair with extensions. I practiced until I was confident. Soon I was even doing friends and family members hair. I remember trying to learn how to do my own nails with acrylic. I’ve just always been adventurous when it comes to beauty.
